Lost in Translation-still love that film 9/10

2001-easier to admire as a work of art than as a film. Were it not for the amazing visuals and ground breaking concepts it would be far more derided for the very poor pacing and lack of emotional connection. Don't want to give it a number rating as it is beyond that I feel.

Another rewatch: cloverfield. Found footage take on the monster genre. Hasn't aged particularly well from a visual effects point of view and the monster design has always been a bit rubbish. Those points aside it was an enjoyable enough 90 minutes or so.

"Found footage" became tired almost instantly.

Marshland. As the reviews have commented, True Detective set in post-Franco Spain.

It will be remade in five years, shot for shot, line for line, but in English for the US audience.

Just back from cinema...

Watched the man from u.n.c.l.e with the other half - brilliant well worth a trip to see it.

Set in 50's/60's Europe cinematography and acting really good, and some lovely cars & boats.

Dredd is a 19/16 in this regard (where is not getting a follow up, I feel the need for the Dark Judges).
There is so much material available for Dredd, it would seem a real shame if the producers didn't make another. Last year I bought the complete case files off the back of Dredd the film. I used to read them as a kid but this rekindled my interest.

Watched 'Lucy' last night. Romps along in a pacey way, funny in places, Scarlett Johansson superb as usual, but totally fails to be convincing in what it's trying to allude too. Quite a few nods or directly ripped off scenes from other films (Trainspotting/Lawnmower Man/2001 for example). I'm also bored of seeing Morgan Freeman being wheeled out to use his voice to add gravitas to any bks theory the script is trying to pass off as scientific 'truth'.

Overall, disappointed. Could have been so much better - and longer with proper writing - at 1hr 22mins it's over quickly.

3.5/twelfthty.

The Railway Man - Colin Firth/Nicole Kidman - Netflix

8/10

Great film, wherever the pace slowed down in the storyline, it more than made up for in hard hitting, character revealing scenes that just gave the viewer more and more back story. Everything was relevant.

Nicole Kidman was a great as a supporting role, just like her character as played in the film.

Highly recommend.

Watched the new Avengers film last night (Age of Ultron). Standard fare - a blur of CGI buildings being smashed up and fights that go on too long. Humour - as ever - comes pretty much solely from RDJ as Iron Man.

Plot: Iron Man makes a new robot, it becomes self aware and goes mental. Hilarity ensues.

Score: Samuel L Jackson out of Scarlett Johansson

annoyed me more than the ending to Kill List.
Can I pick up on this for a second? What annoyed you about the ending to this film? I think it's an excellent film, but I'm well aware lots of people hate it and feel cheated. What was it you didn't get on with?

"Enemy" - 4/10

Jake Gyllehnhall always appeals, but this makes naked lunch feel linear and donnie darko a kids story.
Has potential - but if you don't know what to expect it just comes of as...weird, disjointed, nonsensical.

"Interstellar" - 5/10.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0816692/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Considering it's a nolan film with a massive budget and a stellar cast (geddit), it's too long and doesn't hold together enough to be believed. Sleep tastic.

"Inside Out" - 9.5 out of 10.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2096673/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Pixar genius again - Great animation, concepts, voice artistry, story. So fast you almost can't keep up. I can't wait to watch it again to see what i didn't see the first time. Can't give anything a 10, but this is easily as good as Up or Wall-E or a Toy Story. It's too advanced for kids under 16, which is a bit of a shame, their other films to deliver on kids entertainment very well.

Well that's slightly frustrating, I had some time to kill today and went to the cinema. I had a choice of this or Ant Man and I went for Ant Man, which I give 6/10 because it was good but seems like it was just setting up the sequel rather than trying to be a good film.

I know I deleted Gross Point Blank because I didn't wanna watch what J Cusack calls acting.

biggrin
J Cusack.... would that be Joan or John Cusack?

They're both in the film in pretty much the two main roles!

My wife always likes Colin Firth so I suggested this tonight , we went in totally blind and were both very quiet at the end . Can only say thank-you for the heads up , it was staggering

Run All Night - Liam Neeson

Typical Neeson film lots of guns, some violence and him playing the hard man.

I enjoyed it, SWMBO said it was ok. Watched using Kodi so didn't cost me anything to watch it which is all the better.

New U.N.C.L.E. film - despite everything thrown in by Mr. Ritchie, I thought it was boring. Fell in love with Alicia Vikander, though lick
