Off work with a bad back at the moment, so I thought I'd 'treat' myself t some crap films courtesy of Amazon Prime.

Ironclad
A medieval version of The Magnificent Seven staring James Purefoy, Brian Cox, Jason Flemyng, Mark Giamatti, Charles Dance, Mackenzie Crook and Derek Jacobi, Set in 1215, not long after the barons' revolt and the signing of the Magna Carta. King John (Mark Giamatti at his scenery chewing best) goes back on this word and tries to hunt down and kill, with the aid of an army of Danish mercenaries, all the barons who forced him to sign. A small band of rebels led by a disgraced Templar try to hold Rochester castle to stop King John's army advancing to London.

Brutally violent and a great depiction of the squalor and cheapness of life in medieval times. Not a fantastic film, and woefully inaccurate from a historic point of view, but I rather enjoyed it.

7 gratuitously severed limbs out of 10

Apparently there's a sequel, which doesn't get stellar reviews - may force myself to watch it anyway in punishment for skiving off work.

Wrath of the Titans
Sequal to the remake of Clash of the Titans (I've only seen the original). Starring (and I use this word in the loosest possible sense) Sam Worthington, Rosamund Pike, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Bill Nighy (all of whom should have known better).
Hades and Ares kidnap Zeus and take him to the underworld so they can use his power to release Chronos. Perseus has to save the day yada yada yada.

Just don't / 10

Divergent
Post-apocalyptic society divides people into different groups according to their personality types in effort to ensure peace and stability in pseudo-facist state. Bad guys want to take charge, 'divergents', who don't fit into the groups and hunted down but ultimately are the heroes who save the day (quelle surprise!). Clearly aimed at the young adult audience and teen girl empowerment, enjoyed it nonetheless.

6/10

The sequel, Insurgent is up on tonight's watch list.
Must say I'm a bit underwhelmed by the film selection on Prime so far...

Happy to go against the grain but I don't think it's anywhere near the best. I much prefer the first film simply for its impact - the opening scene with the Imperial cruiser is one of the all time greats and up there with the openings to The Spy who loved Me and Goldeneye - but in this there's no beginning and no end. It doesn't stand up as a film in its own right as its obvious there had to have been one before it and one after it too, it's all middle.

Of course there are plenty of good bits throughout, but there are also some truly cringe full bits too - Jabba's stupid pig guards, Chewbacca's ludicrous wailing throughout, the scene when we first see Jabba and his entourage enjoying the entertainment, Jabba's hover ships and the battle in the desert over the pit with the huge mouth in it - all laughable (although Leiea chained up in that bikini strangling Jabba offers some very welcome redemption) and not worthy of a film held in such high esteem.

Just my opinion of course wink
Mixing up Jedi with empire.... Either top trolling or schoolboy error. Actually scrap that. No schoolboy would make that mistake.
It's neither, it's my opinion having watched it yesterday afternoon. As I've said above, there are great scenes, but there are also some dreadful ones, particularly those that feature Jabba the Hut, so in that respect I don't get why it's supposed to be the best of series and almost revered in its own right. Particularly as its so obvious from the way the story neither begins or ends that there are films either side and that it doesn't stand up as a one-off film in own right.

Call it trolling all you like, I just call it a difference of opinion. You correct in one aspect though, I stopped being a schoolboy 35 years ago.

Jabba was nowhere to be seen in Empire Strikes back! You are talking about the massively disappointing (until the prequels usurped it of that honour) Return of the Jedi.

I humbly stand corrected and bow to everyone's superior knowledge. I do still maintain its obvious it's a 'middle' film of a trilogy that has no beginning or end.

Anyway, I shall slink away quietly now and watch all seven in the correct order to properly reacquaint myself with the series. As a point of order do I go 4561237 or 1234567?

You start with Star Wars 1977 then the next two and stop there.

Haha I knew someone would say something like that, however I am determined to see it through with all seven. I managed all 11 Star Trek films (not including the current one) on consecutive days, Marvel will be next once we establish the correct order for Star Wars.

I think IV-V-I-II-III-VI-VII is commonly recommended, but I might suggest IV-I-II-III-V-VI-VII for a first time viewer.

'The Machete Order'

A New Hope
The Empire Strikes Back
Attack of the Clones
Revenge of the Sith
Return of the Jedi

And ignore Phantom Menace. What happens in that has almost completely nothing to do with the others.

Basically, 4 and 5 first, then 2 and 3 as a flashback/prequel, then 6

Spoilers if you haven't seen, this explains the reasons http://www.t3.com/features/the-star-wars-machete-o...

It was a good week.

I like that, although I'd include Phantom Menace at three just to watch the pod races.

Jaws.

Terrible acting, poor script and bad visual effect.

Michael Caine must have really needed the cash.

Michael Caine talking about Jaws: The Revenge -

“I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific.”

You will never look at food the same way again. A very funny film. Dragged a bit. The food orgy at the end was too much but hilarious.

Would thoroughly recommend but don't expect to be wowed.

5/10
Off to see this tomorrow. The trailer potato scene in the trailer makes me laugh just thinking about it so am probably in the target audience biggrin
