Films I watched this week
Discussion
I watched Room last night.
It sat on our coffee table for weeks because of the synopsis - it's one of those films I seem to have made excuses not to watch as it sounded pretty dull despite the hype.
What a delightful little film.
Synopsis - mother held in captive Amanda Berry style attempts to give her child a normal upbringing within the confines of a shed.
Probably one of the best child actor performances I have ever seen and one of the scenes of the year involving a red pick-up and a carpet.
Let down a little by reaching it's peak about 2/3rds of the way through and being a bit slow up to the end but a terrific character study through the lens of a 5 year old.
8.5/10

Jurassic Park in Concert - 100/10
Headed to London and my first visit to the Royal Albert Hall today. My favourite film + Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was all kinds of good. Best 'cinema' experience I'm ever likely to have (we had movie themes, including Jurassic Park, at our wedding!)
The orchestra were so good that there were long periods that I completely forgot they were there, it just sounded awesome. Then suddenly the score would really kick in and it was proper goosebumps stuff.
We've booked to see Titanic in the same series! Wish id known earlier and would have went to Jurassic Park or Independence DayHeaded to London and my first visit to the Royal Albert Hall today. A Street Cat Named Bob - 8/10
I'm not seriously implying this is an 8/10 film, but I'm a grown man inseparable from his cat (infact he's sat on my lap as I type this, and sleeps next to me every night etc) so this pushed all the right buttons for me. Loved it, captured the essence of the book really nicely.
A pleasant surprise, as I really wasn't expecting much from it. As Mark Kermode said, it's a feel good movie and we need more of those at the moment.

Arrival - 10/10
Loved it, proper full on chills for me at the end. I went in expecting a bit of intelligent sci-fi, I came out having been walloped by a huge emotional punch (particularly as a father to a 2 year old). The entire packed cinema was completely silent as the credits rolled. Best film I've seen this year.
Edit: Overnight this has morphed into a 10/10 for me, so much to think about. I need to see it again.

The Accountant - 6/10
Decent action, ok acting and script, and quite funny at times. However aside from the main storyline there is a second one involving the Treasury Department that just seems to be a total after thought. I'm pretty sure they got done making the main story then thought "it's a bit lean, let's put some meat on the bones" so mad this total separate strand that doesn't go anywhere.
It was alright, but probably won't watch again.

I bought the Blu-ray version of The Fifth Element and we watched it last night for the first time in over a decade. I think I enjoyed it more last night than when I first watched it back in '98. Such a fun film, and looked and sounded great on BR.
do love that film, one or two bits should have landed on the cutting room floor (Chris Tucker I'm looking at you, nearly ruined the film tt ) but it was just such (bonkers) funI watched Under The Skinlast night and what a weird film that was. Its on Amazon Video if anyone wants to see it.
Its got Scarlett Johansson in it, and she's in Scotland, with an English Accent.
I couldn't make head or tail of it. But, she does get her kit off in it, which is nice.
Having read the wikipedia article on it, I still can't understand it. Its supposedly very good, and the camera work is stunning.
