Ghostbusters (2016)

It wasn't terrible! Watched with my 7 year old boy. Funny in parts, was expecting a snorefest of unfunniness. The disappointing part was the cameos from the original, what a waste and a poor use of the 'Ghostbusters Universe.'

6/10

I bought the Blu-ray version of The Fifth Element and we watched it last night for the first time in over a decade. I think I enjoyed it more last night than when I first watched it back in '98. Such a fun film, and looked and sounded great on BR.
One of my favourite films. thumbup
Likewise.
And is making me slightly excited about Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets despite its ridiculous name.

I watched Under The Skinlast night and what a weird film that was. Its on Amazon Video if anyone wants to see it.

Its got Scarlett Johansson in it, and she's in Scotland, with an English Accent.

I couldn't make head or tail of it. But, she does get her kit off in it, which is nice.

Having read the wikipedia article on it, I still can't understand it. Its supposedly very good, and the camera work is stunning.
I think it's a modern masterpiece.

Arrival - 10/10

Loved it, proper full on chills for me at the end. I went in expecting a bit of intelligent sci-fi, I came out having been walloped by a huge emotional punch (particularly as a father to a 2 year old). The entire packed cinema was completely silent as the credits rolled. Best film I've seen this year.

Edit: Overnight this has morphed into a 10/10 for me, so much to think about. I need to see it again.
Seeing it tonight. Looking forward to it!

It probably is. I just didn't understand it.

Saw this last night too. Perfectly sums it up for me too. Very intense 10/10. Even sister D was blown away and she detests sci fi, but the acting, story and score were all amazing. As a regular movie goer, I only saw one advert for this and zero marketing for some reason.

Had it not been for Simon Mayo raving about it on the Kermode/Mayo podcast it would probably have completely passed me by. Plenty of people at my local last night so hopefully it does well, the mainstream reviews I've looked at today have been very strong.

Just got back from seeing Arrival. I think it deserves a thread of its own, with spoilers! So much to discuss.

The Suspect - a standard(ish) Korean (all sub-titled unfortunately) spy/defector thriller with a couple of nice twists. Overall nothing new but not dreadful 3 pukka pies out of 5 for the fat lad in Pyongyang

Yep - Arrival - that's a belter of a movie. Treat yourself to a decent cinema seat with good audio, Denis Villeneuve also did Sicario which als had awesome audio.

Good story, good performances, good existential questions - well worth it. 16 out of 19 - would watch again.

Arrival

4/10 They absolutely savaged one of the best pieces I have ever read. I can get on with a 're-imagining' or a 'take' on the story, but they went too far, and in the wrong direction. This could have been so much more.

Do yourselves a favour read the short story "Story of Your Life" by Tom Chiang and save your money. If you don't get it, read it again, and keep reading it until you do.

Loved the film, but had not read the book. Will be doing so.

I recently read the book and haven't seen the film. I LOVED the book. And the short story the film is based on in particular. But after reading the story my view was that it was unfilmable...and it has a decidedly un-Hollywood ending. So I doubt that the film is much like the book.

I will see it out of respect to the source material..not at the cinema, though.

Just in case it upsets someone...

They made it about the characters rather than the characters journey of understanding. They also couldn't help themselves and threw in a load of bullst that was specifically contradictory to the story in order to put across some sort of moral point.

In this story, we have an opportunity to explore the scientific approach to learning to communicate with a species which does not arrive with the sole intention of wiping out the human race - unlike every other aliens on earth film, except the day the earth stood still, which wasn't anything more than someone making a moral point about nuclear weapons really.

We could have followed the process of combining mathematics, sciences and linguistics to come to understand and communicate with this new species. We could have seen specialists from around the world working together to make breakthroughs in working with that species. But oh no, explosions and the nasty Chinese are more important than the source text. Because Hollywood.

I watched the original Mad Max last night.I hadn't seen it for quite some time years and half expected to be disappointed, as nostalgia often gives you rose tinted glasses.
I was pleasantly surprised and remembered why I'd loved it so much in the first place. So many iconic scenes, but my favourite will always be Johnny Boy's dilemma; handcuffs or ankle? biggrin

That's funny, because that's exactly what I thought the story was about (the interpreting of, and gift of - language, and the benefits of co-operation over secrecy)

Yeah, they developed characters (because a film without them is pretty dry), but not having read the book, the jist of this film is exactly what you're suggesting the book is. And the bad guys - could have been anyone, they just picked the chinese. Could have been the Russkians or the Pakistanis ?

I think there was one explosion ? Not really Independence day fodder - it wasn't an *action* film.

I agree with you on the bad guys. Could have been anyone. That's not my problem. My problem is, why have bad guys in this film?

Saw The Accountant on Monday, Nocturnal Animals on Wednesday and Arrival last night. All fantastic, confusing stories, but all brilliant.

Arrival was particularly good.

Hiya! How family friendly is Arrival? My son (10) is an avid sci-fi fan, and we watched all MCU films, films like Edge of Tomorrow, Interstellar etc. Thanks!
