Hiya! How family friendly is Arrival? My son (10) is an avid sci-fi fan, and we watched all MCU films, films like Edge of Tomorrow, Interstellar etc. Thanks!
Totally family friendly, but the themes are quite adult emotionally so he might find it a bit boring.

Jason Bourne.

Much of a muchness if I'm honest. Not awful, just not great either. A film too many. 6.5/10

Hell or High Water.

Brilliant Western. Well worth a watch, made me want to have a moustache.
Watched it yesterday, really enjoyed it, just kept wondering how it was going to end!

As above. Very family friendly, but he might not understand what's going on and it's not your usual sci-fi. I expect he'll get bored also.

War Dogs - 8.5/10. ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2005151/)

Based on a true story. Jonah Hill is fantastic. Well worth a watch.

Arrival

4/10 They absolutely savaged one of the best pieces I have ever read. I can get on with a 're-imagining' or a 'take' on the story, but they went too far, and in the wrong direction. This could have been so much more.

Do yourselves a favour read the short story "Story of Your Life" by Tom Chiang and save your money. If you don't get it, read it again, and keep reading it until you do.
I took your advice and read The Story Of Your Life. Have to say, it was crap.

I NEVER say this, but the film was better than the book.

Hacksaw Ridge - solid 8/10

Haven't seen a brutal war film like this in a while. In fact the war piece is most brutal I've seen since Saving Private Ryan.

First half is character set up which is actually ok and other half is 'holy hell im glad I didn't have to go to war'.

Fact it was a true story is incredible.

Do watch it but it most definitely isn't a date film.

True Memoirs of an International Assassin - a mildly amusing mistaken identity flick (on NetFlix) with Kevin James, a lot better than most of his efforts (though that is damning with faint praise). 50%

Worth noting for anyone in the U.K. like me who went off to look for a screening of this...it's not out till January 27th.

Non-Stop. Loved this, Liam Neeson can still cut it. Great fight scenes, and kept me guessing all the way, really enjoyed the clever weaving of ideas.

Just finished watching Bourne and I found it very Meh. It just didn't do anything for me - I expected more from it I guess.

Agreed, saw this last night and thought that it was excellent - even if the aliens looked a bit like

9/10 for me

Arrival

Very impressive on many levels, definitely a 9.

Regarding the comments above about the focus on the gung-ho Hollywood aspect, I disagree that it harmed the film, it was obvious they were using that artefact to appeal to the general public, so it didn't affect the impact of the main story at all. Additionally, the cinematography, acting and other aspects of this film were also excellent.

The Lobster

Slightly surreal take on a possible society where everyone must be honestly matched to fitting partners, and being long-term single is no longer acceptable. It's damn hilarious, quite dark and very well executed. It might be marmite for some, but I really loved it. 8+

Imperium. Harry Potter becomes a skinhead white supremacist. hehe
Well not Potter, but Daniel Radcliffe, and he isn't really, he's FBI and working undercover. With Toni Collette. Sounds crap but is actually quite good. Radcliffe is actually a very fine actor, IMHO.

Girl on a Train

6/10.

If you 'like' films, its a good film, but the subject matter is a bit deep and dark (alcoholic woman, abusive husband, murder) and certainly not what I would chose to watch normally. Partner I went with had high hopes and was disappointed with it, said it wasnt gripping, although I managed to stay away and found it not a bad story.
