Just seen a monster calls, now I don't know of I was feeling vunerable in the presence of my gf but bloody hell, there was actual tears. Haven't cried at a film in a long time.

Good movie too.

Blade Runner - Directors or somesuch.

I realise I'm late on this one, but it's not the stunning piece I expected it to be. Barely developed plot. And some interesting visuals does not a classic make! In fact has Ridley Scott actually done more than about 4 films that are any good? Sure they all look good, but come on...

6/10

Edge of Tomorrow.
I do have a thing for Emily Blunt which means it gets an extra 1/2 a point. But it's actually half decent. Tom Cruise brings his usual ability and the story makes coherent sense. All those people saying that "The Grand Tour" is brain out entertainment are missing a trick. THIS is what brain out entertainment means to me! Entertaining laugh

Anyway 8.5/10

Saw La La Land last night, after the first 15 minutes I was a bit bored, bit after that I was utterly hooked. If you want plot, character development, etc then find something else, but as pure escapist nonsense it's brilliant, and I'm not a fan of musicals. A solid 9/10 from me, it does exactly what it sets it to do and nothing more.
Agreed.
As long as you can cope with the fact it's a musical, it's brilliant.

Saw "Ratter" on Netflix at the weekend.

Didn't expect much - synopsis said it was the standard stalking type story, via phone / laptop cameras etc. And it was only an hour and twenty minutes long.

But I thought it was very good. Acting etc. was OK, but nothing special - but the film really built up the tension. Although the lead character realises that something is going on, and that she's being stalked - as a viewer you can see it's a lot more serious than she realises, and it builds to a real climatic ending.

I was impressed.

The other half wanted an easy to watch movie where she didn't have to think too much at the weekend and suggested the new Jack Reacher movie. I watched the first one and thought it was an average formulaic action fest so wasn't expecting much other than a bit of entertainment from the new one. I was wrong, awful dud of a film. Comedy bad guy, poorly acted, 1 dimensional Tom doing Tom, powerful young senior chick who can kick arse, yup we need one of those boxes ticked... I could go on but don't want to waste anymore time to this topic.

Bad Moms - 6.5/10

Enjoyed this, better than I was expecting it to be. My wife is a teacher at a fairly well off village primary school and found the Christina Applegate PTA stuff (which I assumed was over the top for comic effect) scarily real at times.

Mila Kunis, even when supposedly having a really, really bad day, still looked perfect.

"To have and have not" - never seen it in its entirety before. Very atmospheric, if you like Vichy Martinique with samba-playing nightclubs and brilliantined men in zoot-suits and straw boaters. It was all a bit meh, nothing like as good as Casablanca. Even Walter Brennan's cameo as a drunken sidekick didn't really come off, and I'm a big fan of his hookiness. I think too many critics have concentrated on the Bacall/Bogart budding romance and forgotten that the film is very ordinary.

"Three days of the Condor" - haven't seen this for donkeys years, and it kept me engrossed for a couple of hours. OK the costume and social attitudes have dated since 1975, but it is still relevant and a very good taut thriller. Max von Sydow is excellent as the international assassin - I want that job......One of Robert Redford's better performances.

Manchester by the Sea. 7/10. Good, but something felt off, and I can't put my finger on it. I think it's the lack of reactions to the death of the brother.

Passengers, loved it apart from a bit of a crap ending.

Go. Such a classic. So much love for this film.

I saw "GO" in the cinema years ago. It's pretty good. Not the sort of "teen" ste you get these days.

Just jumped after that to "Election" that's also from the same late 90s and is great fun!

Has anyone endured Collateral Beauty? After the review on Kermode/Mayo podcast (and knowing I will never watch it), I went off to read a spoiler-tastic review to see just how bad the 'twist(s)' really are. Oh my.

Finally got round to watching Interstellar.
It looked amazing as I expected and the robots were cool. Mumbling Matt made himself hard to understand but also the death/confession scene I couldn't really hear which made it hard to follow for a bit.
The first act I quite enjoyed it then got to the tedious mucking around in space part. Before finally disappearing up its own arse.
It didn't really help that most characters were dicks.
