Independence Day: Resurgence

Genuinely think this is the worst movie I have seen. I know that sometimes things are so bad they are good but this never even reached the level of bad.

It's sort of a live-action "Up!".
Not heard of it, but that endorsement really wants to make me watch.
Up is one of Pixar's shiniest stars, and that is a heck of firmament.
You won't be disappointed Halb.

I hadn't thought of the 'Up' connections but it's a very good reference.

Found it on Netflix and just watched it with my daughter - very good and thanks for the recommendation

I loved whiplash. Had to be dragged to see La La Land. Loved it. Brilliant movie, great plot. Great performances.

Watched SpongeBob squarepants the movie this week. Bloody epic, 9/10. Patrick dressed in kinky gear was brilliant.

Just watched Office Space again - definitely one of my top five favourite films!
Anyone who works in a corporate office environment will relate to the film.
A cult classic, and one of my faves too. I've lost count of how many times I've watched it.

Goon is worth a watch. In a similar vein, it has so many quotable lines in it too.

Defendor. Brilliant, great performances. Probably more what Kick Ass should have been, Woody Harrelson is a very competent actor.
What would happen if a bloke became a superhero, I think Defendor is an accurate portrayal. biggrin

Trawling through the foreign films on Sky +, none I can particularly recommend.

The Hour of the Lynx - Danish take on tortured monster theme. Nothing new here. 5/10
When Animals Dream - Another Danish take on tortured monster theme. Nothing new here. 5/10
Evolution - French arty weirdness with a community of only women and young boys. 5/10

I really expected, and wanted, to like Whiplash. I'm a jazz musician, I love drill-sergeant approaches like Full Metal Jacket, I love Rocky-esque underdog films of protagonists fighting for their dream, etc. With this expectation I watched Whiplash last weekend, but to me the whole thing seemed too contrived and distracted towards the extreme "knock 'em down and build 'em up" genre. It was certainly "good", but more for its production values than the way the completed article made me feel. My 7/10 isn't a bad score, but it's bad when you're expecting 8.5+.

That makes me view the prospect of La La Land with suspicious eyes, so like you, I will have to be dragged to see it. I have a hunch it'll be just like Glee but with a bigger budget. Perhaps that's a good expectation to go in with, so that I can't be disappointed? smile

If you have two hours of your ears being free per week I can't recommend the Mayo/Kermode podcast enough, films like this are well supported over the usual blockbuster fodder. They cover pretty much every film that makes it to the cinema, so it's a great way of mentally bookmarking films for the future. Also, the banter and film-geekery is first class.

I've never been fussed about Kermode based on his short BBC News 24 film reviews, but him and Mayo are brilliant on the podcast.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot - 6.5/10

Thought this was ok in parts, but nothing special. I loved the early scene where Tina Fey gets stuck in covering an attack and wins the respect of the marines, but the set pieces like that are few and far between as the film carries on.

I will, I've always liked Kermode's delivery. Does it go out on youtube at the same time?
It's live streamed most days via the BBC website, and fans upload clips but the podcast has added extras (around 10/15 minutes usually) and is the best way to listen. By way of an introduction, you can't beat his review of Sex in the City 2, although spoiler alert his politics wouldnt go down well in NP&E

You also get great interviews, eg this with Tom Hanks for Sully

Very sad to hear of John Hurts death this morning. I only watched 44" Chest again a week or so ago and was reminded how good and how versatile an actor he was.

LaLaLand - it's a musical with singing and dancing. Think Singing in the Rain. If that floats your boat then you'll probably love it. It's not my favourite genre but it still made for good entertainment for a couple of hours. 7.5/10 Edit - upped to 8/10 as I'm still humming tunes the day after and wouldn't mind seeing it again.

will be hard to top as the best film I watch this year, was genuinely funny, great characters and scenery. the connection between the 2 main characters is amazing.
10/10
We watched it at home and almost applauded when it finished.

Best film I've seen for some time.
Just watched it based on these recommendations. Didn't disappoint and was hilariously funny.
