American Sniper.

Its VERY good 9/10!

Cooper is excellent
The film is utterly believable and doesn't drag.

I hardly recognised Sienna Miller! She's still on my top 3 fantasy shags biggrin
I didn't expect to like this but I agree it was excellent.

I had no idea it was a true story!
For a given value of 'true', the guy was full of st according to some.
9/10?...

9/10!!!!!!???

I think not.

Watched "Manchester by the Sea" this evening.

Not a football or Bobby Charlton in sight....

Seriously.. a Sad film, somber, sobering and sloooow. Backed up by some nicely apt background classical music the film has just finished and I feel blank. I really don't know what to say, apart from the fact that 2:15 was a long time to be felling melancholy. It has rave reviews and highly ranked scores across the internet, but it wasn't for me.
Nothing to do with the actors, acting or characters.. it was the overall film topic, back story, evolution of the chracters and the ending which put me off. Maybe I would give it a higher score if I wasn't so Sad.

4/10

Spectral - 7/10

Really enjoyed this Netflix original, superb VFX, fun story. Can't believe it never made it to the cinema, better than a lot of dross that finds much wider distribution.

Lost in Translation. What a beguiling and sublime film.

I remember the first time I watched it and where I was, the feeling is still the same.

The Trust: Nic Cage and Frodo. Was better than i thought - very dark in places. Enjoyed it 6/10

Deep Water Horizon: Very good indeed. Catalogue of errors highlighting what caused the chaos. 8/10

Arrival: Really enjoyed this too all be it a bit out there. 7/10

And for nostalgia i watched Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels. Vintage awesomeness. 11/10

Whiplash, fk me that was good! However I didn't see the scene with Miles Teller, his father and I think someone from the music school, some loppy tt who had the Lovefim disc before me left greasy finger prints over the disc and it wouldn't read. Did Miles say Fletcher was a bully etc. and generally put the dog in for him, leading Fletcher to initially leave him hanging at the final concert?

Caught this by accident last night was just kinda on and engaged me. Really enjoyed it even if the end was pretty predictable.

Just watched it. It was ok but it dragged and could have been 30mins shorter. I found myself getting bored in the middle, thinking 'Just get on with what we know you're going to do.'

A film is always good if based on a true story though.

How kid friendly is 'Monster Calls'? I'm planning to go with my 10yo son and 8yo daughter, but not too sure. Thanks

Your 8 y/o definitely will and your 10 y/o may struggle with the first 10 mins or so as it is all about a kid's nightmare. This is then put into context so looking back it's not scary (because the tree is friendly), but it is intense for a kid. If it helps, I let my kids watch a lot more than most parents with children of the same age and I wouldn't show it to my 7y/o daughter and 10 y/o son.

I would say 12 is probably the minimum age but mainly due to the emotional content - it is brutal. It's up to you to decide whether or not your 8 y/o needs to learn about the fear of losing her mother to terminal cancer.

Below is a 'parents need to know' which is reasonably balanced and not hysterical.

Parents need to know that A Monster Calls is the powerful, emotionally wrenching adaptation of award-winning author Patrick Ness' heartbreaking young adult novel about a 13-year-old boy dealing with his mother's terminal illness and sudden visits from a loud, scary storytelling tree monster (voiced by Liam Neeson). The animated stories within the story are frequently bloody, and all have unexpected lessons about humans' complexity. There's infrequent language (one "dammit," etc.), as well as some schoolyard violence -- Conor is picked on by a relentless bully who physically and verbally abuses him (and one day, Conor fiercely reciprocates). Conor also destroys his grandmother's living room and has a terrifying recurring nightmare about a horrible disaster that nearly kills him and his mum. Many scenes feature upsetting, overwhelming sadness as Conor comes to terms with his mother's mortality and his own complicated feelings about what's happening. For families dealing with loss or grief, this film could help kids acknowledge and express what they're going through, but despite themes of compassion and courage, it can be very difficult to watch. Bring tissues.

The Revenant, for the 2nd time and I think I appreciated the cinematography more this time around. It really is a masterpiece of a flick. Dicaprio and Hardy at the top of their game.

Rewatched the jaw dropping marvel that is Interstellar and The Martian over the past two evenings due to virgin/TV being nowt but repeats squished with ads, seems like groundhog day. (having downloaded via utorrent for the first time in a few years was pleasant, 17/18 meg a second via a public tracker surprised me! Chuckled at the memories of waiting overnight (and then some) for just a few hundred Mb sized "patches"

Any recommendations for more space travel movies? I am passing on gravity (one with Sandra Bullock?) as even for my GCSE levels it was just too far fetched. Passengers with the ever lovely Jennifer Lawrence was enjoyable for the most part too.

Anyone remember Event Horizon? Horror sci-fi mash up from the 90s IIRC? Sam Neil's character could of blended right in with Pinheads Hell raiser.

:-)

T2 Trainspotting: I'm glad I went and saw the original again a few weeks ago. I really liked T2, even if it wasn't exactly surprising in terms of content.
