Garden State

This popped up on Sky and I haven't seen it since it was new, but I remember very much enjoying it back then and I did once again last night. It's quite odd, but I like that. biggrin

The Best of Me - 2014
(Amazon Prime)

Yet another romantic drama. This one stars James Marsden and Michelle Monaghan and is based on a Nicholas Sparks novel.

Like many Sparks stories, it jumps forward and backwards in time, and this presents one of the films big problems. The actor playing the younger version of James Marsden (Luke Bracey) looks nothing like him, and doesn't look any younger! It would have worked much better with Marsden playing himself with a wig and a bit of make-up.

It's a standard poor-boy-from-abusive-family meets rich-girl-from-loving family type story until then ending, which is totally and utterly unbelievably preposterous.

I too eagerly awaited Arrival. What a load of tosh!

I refuse to dignify it with a rating!
You looked at the wrong side of things, I guess. It's a Hollywood film after all, one cannot undo that. The book is much better and cleverer, but the acting of Amy Adams makes it worth watching alone.

Finally got around to watching "Firefox" the other day. Many many years ago it was the source of an argument at home (only one video recorder, someone else wanted to record something so I couldn't record it) which led to me buying my own video recorder, my very first one. Recorded it, but never got around to watching it. Fast-forward through three more video recorders, a couple of DVD recorders and some PVRs, it was finally shown a few weeks ago, and I eventually got around to watching it.

Not entirely sure it was worth the wait, if I'm honest. Not a bad film, some wobbly bits, not a bad story, but just showing it's age really.

Love that film.
If you want to know how good it is, watch Airport 80 for some reference....it's truly eye wateringly shockingly awful.

John Wick Chapter2
on the other hand was suitably satisfying in style and wiz bang death stuff..
a tiny slow in places but it's my type of film and hit the mark full on.

Hacksaw Ridge.

Interesting story and that's about it.

Every other single aspect of the production, direction, acting, sound, visuals, realities of battle, etc... has been done much better somewhere else and this was pretty poor across the board.

Could have been so much better. Almost naive and amateurish in the execution. Not fit to sniff the boots of SPR, BoB or FMJ, for a few examples.

Shame, Desmond Doss deserved far more.

On a personals note - how someone can still believe in a god having been through that escapes me. The natural conclusion has to be that he/she/it must be a bit of a .

Yes, Firefox is a decent film, more than decent, really solid and good in places. The effects are not that bad either, and I love the last act, with the politburo and Gant, the Premier is an ace actor.

'It is your stupidity First Secretary!!!!!

I'd quite like them to remake it.
music was spot on too

It was a film of its time though. I'm not sure how you could remake it unless it was set in the same time (ie. a historical setting, like the recent X-Men films) as it only makes sense as a Cold War thriller.

I've mentioned this in here before but caught it again.

Case 39. There aren't many films that really picked at something in me but this does just that. Manages to get into your head.

solid 9/10. Can't remember what i ranked it last time, possibly more.

That. Final. Scene.

Tenuous link - My dad's last boss in the RAF was the brother of Craig Thomas, author of the book.

It could work if set in North Korea. clint Eastwood would need to be Chinese though.

Or set it in Iran. Clint character is a broadway musical star, asked to join the operation to support his country, who has to bluff his way on to the airfield by using his acting? That could work.

And just in case things go wrong, maybe they could come up with some sort of "secret signal" so he can let his fellow team members know to abort.

They're both films, storyville is just the BBC documentary film archive.

Notes on Blindness is a film set to the writings of a man as he looses his sight, the narration is all his own notes but voiced by an actor and actors play the parts. It's a beautiful insight into someone loosing their sight but also a beautiful insight into love and the human condition.

Life animnated is a perfect companion film to the above, a documentary following a severely autistic boy who spends his childhood watching Disney films as it's the only thing through which he can communicate himself to the world around him.
