Just watched Arrival.

3/10

Only good bit was seeing Kang & Kodos, the aliens in the Simpsons. Apart from that it was bloody awful.
Independence Day more your speed?
No idea? I saw the original one which was very "of its time" I guess? There was just no substance to Arrival and we were just expected to make huge leaps of faith in relation to learning their language. It was just tedious viewing though. Ironic given the whole "time" theme as it made 2 hours feel like 4.

Just back from seeing Logan.

Wow. Intense. Shades of The Road at times. Also some Mad Max elements.

I won't say more but bloody hell. It was good

Quite a bit of "Blood Father" about it too.

I'm enjoying R rated comic book stuff...be it out and out stupid with Deadpool, or this gritty, dusty dirty, western chase road movie...

Not this week but we did go and see Jackie. Now not exactly my kind of film but worth a watch. It was a bit slow in places and surprised that it was not a life story and only focused on the very short time span of her husbands death. (Oops, spoiler!).

There were a few that did walk out of the film as it was quite (understandably) depressing but compelling viewing and well acted.

This Is Spinal Tap

Yes I´m late to the party with this one but had never got round to it before.

Some amusing moments, not as funny as I was led to believe, but maybe it´s because I´ve seen so many parodies and pop culture references I kind of knew what to expect.

Scraped a 7/10

Yeah, it's been copied so many times, some shine may have worn, always worth a watch though.

Kong Island
Well I enjoyed it.
But then I loved the 2014 Godzilla too.
This one though delivers on the bit Godzilla missed....as in Massive, brutal monster things beating the crap out of each other in full day light...it's a slug fest.
Plenty of slower "story" stuff, some excellent shocks, incredible effects...proper brain out fun. Some of the imagery of 1970's Huey choppers flying into the sun with Kong about were really beautiful. The score is quite good also, lots of loud guitar rifts from the era.
So, decent acting, decent story, awesome visuals, great action....satisfied!
Monarch, a government funded agency finds an island via brand new satellite imagery tech, they want to go there before the pesky Russkys do. Ships and planes have disappeared nearby in the past so a military escort goes with them to see what natural resources can be had...
The main government protagonist makes a point of saying that nuclear testing in the area was not testing but an attempt to kill the things that lived there - a line taken directly from Godzilla.....at the same time he describes them as MUTOs...again directly from Godzilla - I'm not sure how I feel about these two being in the same film though...
7.6/10

I'm worried that Kong is a CGI action fest. Are there any emotional moments? Did you care about the characters?

+ve The CGI especially where Kong is concerned is superb...and he has friends on the island that were equally well realised.
There's a very 70's feel to everything...decent period/detail stuff
The cast is very good, the whole ensemble must number 20 or so and yes there were one or two that stood out...did I care about them? well again, one or two of the shocks involve the erasing of characters you feel sure are going to be just fine...

-ve Emotional moments are few and far between, the back story is slim. We found an island, we're going to explore the island....oh st!...we must get off the island.
I couldn't detect any political message or anything
Some of the other beasties are less successful CGI wise...more Harry Potter stuff, but overall..it's a film about King Kong...in the same 'universe' as Godzilla... you know what's coming...

Hmm, I wonder why Kong is 10 times bigger in this version...? smile

I actually meant "you know what's coming" as in: you know what this film serves up..
but yeah... equally.. you know what's coming!

Wild tales. Argentinian Oscar nominated movie, six short stories of vengeance. Fantastic film, people tying themselves up in knots of their own making, the highlight being the guy who gets into a road rage incident, flips the other guy off only to break down a few miles later, hilarity & death ensues.

Thing about Tap is when you've been in a pro touring band it almost loses its parody as it's absolutely spot on.
