You're maybe not target audience.

Do you mean The Arrival (2006) or Arrival (2016)?

Both are well reviewed - what didn't you like?
The latest one. Zero pace and a predictable ending from about 30 minutes in.
The fact that the ending was predictable was kind of the whole point. If you read the short story it's based on (which is MUCH better than the film) this is made quite clear. The aliens think in a way that defies our understanding of physics...possibly. smile
biggrin We had the discussion about books being better months ago.

Never compare the book to the film, they never compare so there is no point. I've never read the book either but my God was this film so crap and slow. Even my other half who usually loves this sort of stuff said the same (she likes to read too unlike my good self). It was dirge of the highest order. Utter stool water. There was nothing I could take from this as a high point, the cinematography was ok but not spectacular. It reminded me of the hype around Cloverfield and how that story also failed to deliver.

Wrong, I am if you consider the story in the same line of many other films which I do like (Prometheus, Interstellar, Event Horizon etc). We watched (and commented on this thread) 2001 a few months back, aside from the cinematography that film is diabolical but has gathered some sort of epic cult status which means people feel compelled to say it is epic, which it is not. Released today it would be on a par with Johnny Mnemonic.

Cloverfield was ste because you a) didn't see the monster and b) You hated the characters as they were s so you didn't root for them.

I actually really like AVTAK, one of the best Bond baddies. I think Moore had the best baddies. Drax, Walken, General Speers et al.

With regards to Prometheus, I didn't like it at first. In fact I remember standing up at the end of the film and saying how wk it was which then got a round of applause from the other viewers. That said, I accidentally stuck the film on one night and the 2nd time round it just got better, the 3rd even more so. It really is a good film.

I have to say I watched Prometheus last night. I didn't mean to, but found it when channel surfing. There are lots of problems, but tell me a sci-if /comic book film that doesn't have plot holes and nonsense. Actually that's a genuine challenge. If you can think of a sci-fi film that doesn't then please tell me. I've seen Prometheus 3 or 4 times now and find it very rewatchable. Despite its obvious flaws it's a very slick, good looking piece of film making.
For the record I've not yet seen arrival, but have the DVD (just waiting for the time), I liked interstellar (despite being defended by the inception horns on imax) and don't really like 2001 very much.

Why slated? All Bond movies are great, wonderful, marvellous and exiting. But some are greater, wonderfuls, marvellouses and exitings than others.

Watched Lion last night.

As said, it's a little long but it needs to be to get to a proper conclusion without rushing things. A really lovely, but bittersweet, film IMO.

8.5/10

Split
Nasty bloke has 23 or maybe 24 personalities...
Some girls suffer whilst a psychologist tries to sort it all out.
M Knight Sham's story with predictable cameo appearance...

McAvoy does very well I thought.
Along with a bit of a shoe-horned ending which made me VERY happy.

All good then... a solid 8 for me

Ted was today's freebie. Funny in parts, but the middle dragged. If it hadn't been for the promise of Flash Gordon at the party I could easily have turned it off around then. 6/10

Ridley Scott should have been shot for Prometheus. Compared to Alien it was absolute ste. Talk about failing to live up to your own standards!

Kill The Irishman - 'biopic' set in '70s Cleveland. Netflix, surprisingly good

Look at the films Scott has made. This idea that he is some kind of directorial god is ste!

Black Hawk and Alien and Body of Lies. Would be my picks from that lot! (With a notable "good film" for Gladiator, even if I'm not a fan)

Feel free to list a director with a bigger, more impressive body of work, than the guy responsible for (amongst others); Blade Runner, Alien, The Martian, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Thelma And Louise, The Counselor, Legend.

The first two alone are right at the very pinnacle of sci-fi movies.

I can understand if you don't like his work, but to say the guy isn't a directorial god is...wrong. biggrin
