I went knowing nothing about the comic, thought visually it was lovely (not just SJ) but the story was pretty thin, and some of it was a bit juvenile (for want of a better word), i chuckled when the baddie called in the "spider tank" for instance. I had assumed that was because it was taking bits from the comic to be authentic. Strange mix of tech as well, i.e. some ultra advanced stuff made driving a boxy Lotus and firing bullets seem a little odd.

A watchable but far from great 6.5/10
Fair comment. Yes, you assumed correctly - the spider tank (and variants) play a big part in the anime and manga.

As a film, it was as you say - quite watchable. But as a live action film of the manga (or even a remake of the anime), it wasn't really one. It's kind of like those films that are "based on a true story" but which actually bear very little resemblance to the true story. If you see what I mean. smile

Wanted to see Free Fire but inexplicably my local Odeon thought 5 of the 7 screens should show Beauty and the Beast. So...

Life - 7/10

Enjoyed this. Nonsense and nothing new, but enjoyable and very well made nonsense. Ending spotted a mile off, but fun anyhow.

6 people in the cinema this evening so presumably it's on it's way out already.

Interesting. I haven't seen the anime for a good few years (and never read the manga) but I felt it was pretty close. i think maybe some elements are from the "stand alone complex" as well, but would need to rewatch both to be sure. The only bit I didn't really like was the constant exposition, to try and keep people up with the plot.
The closest comparison can think of is the watchmen film vs comic. Quite faithful to story, very faithful aesthetics with some shots exactly the same, slightly different ending that everyone can understand.

Imperium

FBI agent Harry Potter goes undercover as a Nazi. It's not bad. I managed not to fiddle with my phone for the 100 or so minutes. Formulaic, no surprises, no real tension, a bit beige. If there's nowt else on and you want to watch something and not get bored, it's OK.

6.5/10
I thought it was awful, transparent, and "edgy" for the sake of it.

Harry Potter in a strop.

2/10.

You should watch 'dead Harry Potter' in Swiss Army Man. it's weird and wonderful.

Well....to be honest I'd have prefer something a little more subtle..... They went with " put down that cookie, cookies are for closers". But still pretty cool. *

Given it was a packed 5 PM half term screening...... a quote probably lost on everyone other than the and my 15 year old who is a big fan and even got "always be closing" cuff links for a wedding we had to attend last year!

Anyway - Very very good.

So far Batman/lego and this 2 of the best films I've seen this year!

  • a bit ruined by some dumb Halifax advert that preceeded the film (they seem to have sponsored the film in some way????) And the advert had a bunch of the films clips in it-including the quote. Stupid.

You know at the beginning of the film when the Police asked the witness who the guy was? Without thinking I said, 'He's in there. The little fella at the bar'.

Ridiculous casting - anyone would think he produced it...

I can't believe people still moan about TC playing JR.....get over it! The number of people that read the book AND CARE is TINY!!!! The movie people would be nuts to pander to that small group and cast someone rubbish but the "right" size.

The second film sucks.....but has nothing to do with TC and his height.

I saw the second one a few weeks back and didn't think it was as bad as some make out. It's not a patch on the first but it's not awful.

Another Mother's Son based on a true story about a woman in Jersey during WW2 who hides an escaped Russian POW in her house. Stars Jenny Seagrove, John Hannah and Ronan Keating. I thought it was very good and well worth seeing. 8/10.

Jimi: All Is by My Side

Hendrix biopic which I spotted on BBC4 I think and watched last night. Solid film, not great but very watchable and some good performances - the guy playing Hendrix captured him well.

None of his original songs featured as apparently the estate wouldn't give permission, which was a shame but didn't detract too much.
