Had sister-in-law and 6 year old niece staying last night, so watched Enchanted. Had niece laughing out loud and enough to keep adults entertained as well. The cast all perform really well and seem to enjoy themselves. Solid 8/10 family fare.

The Girl On The Train...
Despite a strong performance by Emily Blunt, it's just a middling thriller without much to offer.

I watched Rogue One and have to take the opposite view to Ash. It's definitely the best of the newer star wars films. I agree about the CGI faces though, they should have just used an actor that resembled Peter Cushing or one that didn't but could mimic his mannerisms.

The Force Awakens was a bit shameless for me. OK so we now have the franchise and we need to make some money quick... Lets just copy Episode 4. That sold well. Any movie where the menacing villain looks like a geography teacher is onto a loser.

Overall, I liked that Rogue One was a bit more gritty, the movie has more of a war film feel than a cute Disney fantasy. As a story, it isn't as complex but I thought they did well in they way they told it and also it also linked really nicely to the start of the original Episode 4. I doubt I'd watch TFA again even if it came on at Xmas and I was glued to the sofa with a dinner hang over but I'll definitely watch Rogue One again.

A solid 8 / 10 from me.

The Uncanny valley thing definitely didn't work, strange as the rest of the film is very smooth. Loved Rogue ONe, and I also prefer it to the other new one, I hope it shows that because Disney knows this franchise is a winner, they will allow more experimentation within this shared universe, in style and theme, it doesn't always have to be about the force and the nasty empire...even though I do love those concepts. Couple that I've watched over the last week:

The Hunter (1980)

Steve McQueen as a bounty hunter, tracking down crims across the USofA.

Notable for being McQueen's last film and featuring some decent period film of late '70's/early '80's USA.

Deepwater Horizon (2016)

Already well discussed here. Standard disaster-movie fare, but well played with good effects & very watchable.

The biggest issue for me was the characters were incredibly bland. Jyn had just one expression - Afghan Girl - and her allies blended into an anonymous group I didn't care about. Saw Gerrera could have been interesting if they showed him actually doing some good stuff before he went nutty, but without that I didn't care when he met his fate; and I can't even remember the other characters' names. I liked the droid though, it had some good lines.
The main character that was at odds with the movie and totally unnecessary for me was the blind Asian martial arts guy. There was no need for that type of character, it just seemed to be trying to add a new movie genre to the franchise to give it a wider appeal.

I just put that character down to the idea that you have these force sensitive types, and it's not binary. You will have at the one end people who have bugger all sensitivity (most everyone), and at the other extreme the likes of the Jedi / Sith etc. In the middle then there will be some who have a little, but not much, probably want more and treat it as kind of a religion like this guy.

I have no concept at all of the extended universe, but that's just how I justified him to myself. I tend to agree that the character's existence or not probably wouldn't have made a significant difference to the movie or plot, but yeah that broader appeal probably had a hand in it.

Although, to be honest, given that they all got 'alderaaned' at the end it probably doesn't matter. Unless they are planning some further spin off with these characters pre Rogue One, in which case maybe they can flesh it out a lot more.

Smiler.

Deepwater Horizon.

I work in the industry and watched much of the repair job footage live from the ROV streams online. In fact the part where the mud pit / shaker room explodes, killing everyone was a bit close to home I was a Mud Engineer with MI Swaco in 2004 my wife is now glad I no longer go offhore, the stories I could tell!!

The Rig was a bit clean for my liking ( not enough rust), the Internet works too well, but GoM is a lot different to the North sea.

the movie is a bit tech-heavy, it doesnt really explain what is going on or why the well testing made things worse. found myself explaining a lot of it to my missus.

John Malkovich is excellent as alway. effects were good. acting not too bad.

7/10
Really enjoyed this too. I was actually shouting at the telly when the gas was flowing up the pipe but no alarms were going off.

Also watched, Shadow Dancer on iPlayer the other day.

Solid 8/10. A bit like 50 Dead Men Walking, which l also rate the same.

I've read a few of the old extended universe books, basically the trilogy that happens after RotJ, and yeah, it's not binary, there are people who are force sensitive. It takes a lot of training to actually be able to do stuff. It's like this shaolin monks who say they can float over mountains, no o0ne sees it, but we still have all the monks. biggrin

I've just caught 10 mins of the chick Ghostbusters film...and I laughed. A lot.

I'm going to have to watch the whole thing. boxedin
I should've gone with my instinct.

This film sucked BALLS.

You could almost feel the cast cringeing as they pulled off some more stupid celebratory dance moves or came out with some utterly unfunny "joke".

I clearly caught the "best" 10 minutes.

I feel dirty. Properly dirty, like won't come off in the shower dirty.

I stopped with probably another 15/20 mins left (just after Chris Hemsworth gets possessed) so if that's a quote it's lost on me. tongue out

The ending is a generic comic book film ending of the heroes fighting off lots of monsters, I've heard it's a straight copy of the Pixels ending if you had the misfortune to watch that.
If you missed Dan Ackroyd's cameo it's worth finding that on YouTube, think he had the best line in the film.

Ghost in the Shell

Watched this in IMAX 3d - WOW! That really was a feast for the eyes, quite spectacular. I loved it it. Quite a bleak vision of a possible future and I guess it does raise questions about tech and how we interact with it.

Just watched Roger Rabbit. What a great film! And really believable with the cartoon and real world merged. Hard to believe that it was made in 1988. Its graphically better than some CGI crapfests out today.

I looked into seeing of maybe they were making a remake of Roger Rabbit, which unfortunately they would use CGI, and they did im fact have an article about it but they said even though they did have a script ready to shoot it was cancelled and subsequently 'binnes for good, never to ne made'. Something about Warner Bros and Disney licensing blah blah blah that creates too much conflict. Stuff like that pisses me off. I mean come on, whats the problem!! Why cant the studio execs just come to proper terms and friggen make what IMO would be a real worthy blast from the past!

Patty cake.. Patty Cake.. PATTY CAKE!! PATTY CAKE!!! Hahahah NOT PATTY CAAAAAAKE!!! ANYTHING BUT PAAAATTY CAAAKE!!
lol, friggen classic!!

Or when he says something like, 'vodka on the rocks.. AND I MEAN ICE!!' and it gets served to him with actual rocks in the glass.

Roger Rabbit was properly brilliant - It was indeed of its day and you could see where the Toons overlapped on to the real characters but it still had/has more soul that most films.

You do think that the animators of Jessica were just having over the top gun though. The dirty perverts hehe

Especially when you compare it to the crap-fest that was Space Jam....
