I would recommend Bitter Lake, Adam Curtis' latest documentary (I assume) and you can watch it on iPlayer. It's about Afghanistan and Saudi. - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02gyz6b
Good recommendation. I watched it last night on the red button. Very absorbing and we haven't learned from much history at all.

Im a huge Adam Curtis fan - all his documentaries are just hypnotic to watch, and are like a visual/aural stream of consciousness starting off at some innocuous fact and ending up explaining the reasons for 9/11 or something.
Loved the 3-part series "All watched over by machines of loving grace", and "the power of nightmares" is still so valid.

If you too are big Curtis fan, then you'll likely get this brilliant pisstake

Gone Girl: a solid 7.5/10.

Good performances all round and excellent but I read the book and that was so well done that the twist wasn't the shock it should have been. I would advise anyone who hasn't read the book to NOT watch the first five minutes of the film as it pretty much gives the game away. Poor Barney though. Should have taken his own advice about the crazy/hotness curve.

The Equalizer: a very surprising 7.5/10.

Thought this was going to be a standard invincible assassin movie that usually runs out of steam about half way through but it was extremely enjoyable. Denizel was like some sort of human Predator. You just knew he was so much smarter than the blokes tracking him and the scene in the 'Homebase' at the end was terrific. When you saw the label saying Industrial Grade Barbed Wire you knew it wasn't going to end well. I will be looking round my local store in a whole new light now! Only things that weren't so good were the unrealistic money warehouse scene and why they only remembered to tell us what happened to one of the main characters right at the end.
Brilliant brain out action film, one of the best for some time.

But where was the TV theme tune? Copeland couldn't have wanted that much surely?

The Naked Gun - The jokes have got old, they're all awful anyway but this is still a million times funnier than anything Adam Sandler or Seth Rogen have ever done. 8/10 (1 out of 10 for the jokes x 1000)

Southpaw - Boxer does well, boxer does badly, montage, boxer does well. 6/10

The Second Best Marigold Hotel - Pensioners keep hotel in India going. Alright if you like that sort of thing. 5/10

Straight outta Compton - very good biopic of the N.W.A with a great soundtrack as you expect. A few of the scenes wasn't explained fully and it was overly long but I enjoyed it. Highly recommended.

Really enjoyed this too. Not something I expected to like, but it was very well done.

Cobain: Montage of Heck - 4/10

I've wanted to see this for a while, and being a massive Nirvana fan back in the 90's when I was in my teens had the tissues ready (no, not that way) for a bit of sobbing, the way I had done when watching Senna.

Firstly, it was 2.5hrs long, jeez, by the time he died I was almost cheering, so I could get to bed. (ticket to hell, one please)

Secondly, I don't know why, maybe it's because I'm a bit older, but all the angst he went through to become a drug addict, I just wanted to shout, "pull yourself together man, ok your parents divorced, get over it, you've go a daughter a wife and responsibilities, stop being so bloody selfish thinking about how you feel and get on with it!"

One particular home video with him holding his 1 year old daughter clearly out of it, just annoyed the hell out of me.

Yup, I'm turning into my Dad.hehe

I thought the same - my review from the old thread:
"Cobain: Montage of Heck
Good for die-hard fans, what with lots of behind the scenes audio & video footage, both with the band and at home. But it was about 30 mins too long, with some over-indulgent animated sections used to convey what was supposedly going through his head at the time. And towards the end there was some footage that was quite hard to watch, kurt and courtney off their faces looking after the baby. As a Nirvana fan, i know he was increasingly depressed leading to his suicide - this film doesnt give any real explanation, just a glimpse into it - and that feels like voyeurism"

Additionally, perhaps it should have been called "Cobain: Montage of Tits", as by my count, Courtney got hers out 3 times in the latter part of the film. I like funbags as much as the next chap, but it didnt seem that necessary for this documentary.

Dave Grohl was conspicuous by his absence - i wonder if he disagreed with the film? Kris "will-work-for-food" Novoselic was up for it though.

I really want to see this one, probably have to wait for the Dvd though.

The Voices - Dark, twisted WTF comedy with Ryan Reynolds. Jerry is crazy and hasn't been taking his pills. His pets talk to him, the evil cat and the good dog. Jerry wants to be nice but the foul-mouthed cat is winning him over and now he's contemplating bad things. 7/10

Straight Outta Compton - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1398426

I really enjoyed this, very interesting, funny & moving, killer sound track to boot.

I think it had too much ground to cover in a short film so details of the legal / manager stuff was kinda skipped over which didn't make it clear what the problems were.

But regardless, highly recommended.

8/10

Repeat viewings yesterday but still worth a watch :

TRACKER with Ray Winstone hunting down a Maori accused of murder 8/10
GIRL IN A CAFE with Bill Nighy doing what he does best, twitching nervously as he meets and dates a young political activist ( with a point of view ) surrounding a G8 meeting in Iceland. Also 8/10.
Both have been on before, hence the repeat viewing but remain a good watch when they come back again.

Re-watched: Children of Men at the weekend. Its been sometime since I watched it, but seems more relevant than ever based on the current migrant situation. I really don't think it would take us much of a push to get to a similar situation (without the infertility bit of course).
This film has several fantastic set pieces filmed in a single shot. Not sure how it was achieved but must have been incredibly complex to plan and shoot.
Excellent story, cast, production and acting its close to perfect.
as a side note I love the fact that Clive Owen is wearing a London 2012 Olympics sweatshirt throughout. Given the film was shot 2 years prior to London winning the right to host the games its quite an accurate prediction (hopefully its the only one in the film)
If you haven't seen it you really must ASAP.

9.75/10 (its so good it warrants a conventional score)

I've had this sitting on my Sky+ box for ages - well over a year - from when it was shown on telly once. I keep meaning to watch it. I should probably do so.

Only trouble is that at some point I read a plot synopsis on it so have probably spoiled it for myself somewhat. frown

Southpaw. Had high hopes for it but it let me down. Whilst the camerawork and boxing scenes were good the storyline was far too cliched. Needed more training montages as well! 5.75/10

Superb film and quite scary really.

As an aside, what's happened to Clive Owen these days?
