unfortunately 800 page novels don't fit in to 2.5 films, but they don't stretch to x2 2.5 films.

You either do a 3 to 3.5 single film, or x2 1h45 to 2h films.

I think one of the early mistakes made trying cram a book into one film and ruining it in the process was Dune, they had 2 films worth of footage, massive amounts of the book was filmed and cut, never ever to be seen even in special editions.

But you, apparently can squeeze a 130 page book into 3 2.5 hour films...

I give you...

...drum roll...

Its been a couple of years since I read it but it is definitely more than 130 pages. More like 350 from memory.

Oh and for the record the fourth film of the trilogy was certainly a nod towards "mostly harmless", I thought more people would have got it.

King Hearts and Coronets.

I recorded it over the weekend and watched it last night.

The best Ealing comedy. Arguably the best British comedy film.

The script is superb.

An hour and a half's pure joy.
Yes, and I'd forgotten how gorgeous Joan Greenwood was.

Eh?
Its the Douglas Adams Edit.
Am I missing the obvious in that like a lot of series these days they divided the final episode into two films, hence the fourth film of the trilogy.
It started with the Matrix sequals, and carried on with harry potter 7, the belief that you cant put a 800 page book inbto 1 2.5 hour film.

From what i am reading, while its good, theres a lot of filler, and the part 1 film could have been a fair bit shorter. Still enjoy it mind.

The Douglas Adams bit was in reference to the recurring numbering joke (a trilogy in 5 parts etc)
See also Spike Milligan's 7-book war memoirs trilogy.

It's poorly written English, accepting as it does the notion that everyone on here is a film buff with a lack of irritation when the English language is abused.

Father Goose on Film 4.

A film I have seen dozens of times but it ever fails, to me laugh.

Thoroughly enjoyable.

Amy. Really engrossing film that draws you in, but what a tough watch. Felt as though a couple of key people in her life couldn't believe their luck when she became famous and were determined to milk it for everything that they could, regardless of the consequences. Very sad.

Moon.

Really enjoyed this. Saw it before years ago second viewing much more favourable. 8 /10 easily.

Impossible mission rogue something or other.

Ok watchable not getting the hype for this one. Best I can say is it was better than James Bond. Although the woman in it is my new favourite.

6.5/10

I thought Coherence was great (saw it yesterday) and really liked the improvised nature of the acting. I'm not sure it would hold up to second viewing once you knew all the plot secrets which is why it's a hard film to talk about without spoiling it, but I'll be very surprised if I enjoy, say, the next Star Wars or Alien movie as much as I did this film about a bunch of people in a room.

I would have enjoyed some more time indulging in all the ways things were going crazy at the end once you understood how messed up everything had become, but it probably wouldn't have made the movie any better than it was.

Watched two films over the past week,

Ant Man - bought it on Amazon Video yesterday, with I hadn't have wasted £9.99 - Just the usual predictable Marvel fare with an extra smattering of comedy. Same song, slightly different tune. It was OK, but I found myself drifting off.

Southpaw (Love Film) - Liked this a lot, like an updated Rocky but with a harder edge.

Just watched Coherence seeing as a few people have mentioned it and yeah, if you go into it knowing how it was made it's a brilliant movie.

Just watched this. I sat there loving the musical score. My wife sat there on her phone and kept turning it down. Philistine.

Watched "Under The Skin" with Scarlett Johansson this week. I'd heard good things about it, and the critics absolutely loved it so thought I'd give it a punt.
My thoughts:
  • It's shot in quite a gritty, almost documentary/guerilla style. Apparently some of the "actors" where members of the public and didn't recognise SJ (She wears a black wig and kind of resembles a young Liz Taylor in the film).
  • SJ gives a good performance in a cold/detached sort of way
  • I'd say the cinematography was decent.
  • It's painfully slow in places and a large part of the film is her driving round Glasgow in a Sprinter van picking up "victims"
  • It's quite abstract and unless you've read the book the film's based upon, you might struggle to wonder what is going on and realise who she really is.

Felt a bit cheated after all the hype, so watched "Kelly's Heroes" on DVD biggrin

My dad was a chauffeur to a film star and reckoned that Greenwood was second only to Liz Taylor in appearance, although Greenwood was a bit of a live wire and was much more fun at a party. He said he could tell me stories (of the parties) but never did.

Valerie Hobson, Edith in KH&C, married John Profumo and despite the rather public revelations of his predilections, stayed with him. Yet, according to my father, she was as prim as she appeared in the film, although she had a sharp tongue which she presented as humour. My father thought she was brilliant.

But Greenwood was stunning.

Spectre - A rare cinema visit.
It was ok, felt a bit flat for the first half even the car chase in Rome lacked excitement but sounded lovely (how slippery were the cobbles?)
The plot was paper thin but thinking about it Bond has never been for complex story lines so I can let it go. A few things annoyed, the lack of people anywhere (on the train, in central London) the way the HQ was wired in a very obvious wired for demolition way.
I liked some of the jokes and the better gadgets but not over the top.
