Christmas Carol was good. Compulsory viewing once a year for me.

Perhaps a series set in the 1980s, Blackadder as secretary to the cabinet, Baldrick his assistant, Miranda Richardson as Thatcher, Stephen Fry as Michael Heseltine. Hugh Laurie? Dunno. Let Ben Elton loose on the script..........

;-)

But on balance, meh. Don't want them to ruin it - Only Fools and Horses is the great example, they should have stopped when Grandad died.

There were some good OFAH episodes/stories with Buster Meredith.

First rule of entertainment, "always leave them wanting more".

IMHO probably best not to remake the show. Can you think of anything Atkinson's done in the last few years which was remotely funny?
The curse of having a lengthy career in comedy.
To be fair, Atkinson has been in semi-retirement since Blackadder/Bean.

Given the age of the cast, the House of Lords could be a suitable setting

Spot on. It's the "weight of expectation" that usually makes these programmes appear to be disappointing in quality. If they could "stand alone" they might be considered in a more favourable light.

Just because you don't see him on screen it doesn't mean he has left the business all together. Rowan has been involved involved in numerous production companies over the years. One of them was Hatrick who were quite big.

Blackadder goes fourth is one of my favourite series. Millennium episode was crap.

I also liked thin blue line too.

I personally don't think they should do a 5th series.

I actually enjoyed Johnny English/Barclaycard adverts, so as already mentioned, some sort of spy sitcom. wink

Blackadder needs to be smart (though thwarted) though, he can't regress to being an idiot.
It's such a shame that Rowan has played idiots for 20 years, he is so so much better as a conniver.

Have to agree with this, Mr Bean was sort of funny when he first appeared but the fact he's been basically playing him ever since has gotten VERY old. Would very much like to see Rowan go back to doing smart again.

Virtual brownie points for whoever suggested a political Blackadder as I could definitely see that working, although you could argue that Rick Mayall has already done this and with some aplomb in the form of The New Statesmen (another brilliant show)

A 70s/80s political one might be good, like an evil Yes, Prime Minister? biggrin

Fry as a Sir Humphrey, constantly thwarting. Baldrick as his hopeless PPS, maybe McInnery as a rival?

I remember seeing an old interview with Rowan Atkinson where he said one of the ideas for Blackadder 5 was for Edmund to be a rock band manager in 1960s swinging London. "Bald Rick" was to have been a drummer in one of the bands Edmund managed.

I always wished this series had been made. Sounded like it had lots of potential.

The article is pretty loose. It states one of the issues being Hugh Laurie's salary demands...

I would really like to see this happen smile, but I'm not hopeful.

Stephen Fry mentioned a Colditz story was very briefly bandied about and could be interesting.

But too much time has passed now

I forgot that one and it was quite funny from what I remember.

Did you ever see "The New Statesman" with Rik Mayall as Alan B'stard? Piers Fletcher-Dervish was his PPS, reminding me a lot of Gideon "George" Osborne. Lots of episodes on YouTube.

I mentioned this already. It was in effect Blackadder does politics but with Rik Mayall in the lead role playing the conniver rather then Rowan.

Yip. The Blackadder Five (prospective title) had been at least considered. One of the stories was to make Baldrick responsible for JFK's death. D AN idea later used by Red Dwarf.

Yip, loved it back then, along with Hot Metal. Not sure if it still stands up to the test of time, but I can see the BA crew doing it justice, with a more understated style.
I love the Yes, Prime Minister repeats...not seen the remakes.

I think that'd work pretty well to be honest.

Ben Elton was one of the driving forces behind the Blackadder series but he's not been funny for well over a decade now.

Well my opinion is that OFAH was still good after Grandad died (I actually preferred Uncle Abert) but should definitely have finished when they sold the watch, made a fortune, and all walked off into the sunset.

Agree about Blackadder though - just DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!
