And I think the opposite.
If you don't require it - don't listen to it (as I'm sure you already don't).
Can't really avoid it when listening to the CE breakfast show. Unless I turn it off and then guess when the ramblings have come to an end and I don't mean Evans' either. If you don't require it - don't listen to it (as I'm sure you already don't).

Atheist here. I don't like thought for the day as it doesn't allow for a secular voice. I also hate how the shoehorn religion in to the topic of the day.
I also hate the saying 'all faiths and none'
Oooh - a lot of hate going on here.I also hate the saying 'all faiths and none'
I wonder - are atheists happy - or are they perennially "hating" things. They do seem to be in a constant state of anger.

Careful with your generalisations there Eric. Shouty atheists might be angry but extrapolating that to all atheists would be a mistake. I wonder - are atheists happy - or are they perennially "hating" things. They do seem to be in a constant state of anger.
Maybe it's the shouty ones we hear the most.
I'm not that religious either but I don't "hate" those who are believers. And I certainly don't let a five minute slot on the radio wind me up. Life's too short to get angry over such minor irritants (if you look on it as an irritant - that is).

Like someone said earlier John Bell (Iona Community) and Indarjit Singh (former editor of the Sikh Messenger and now member of the House of Lords I think) are good value along with a couple of bishops (e.g Tom Butler) as they give a world view without necessarily smothering it in religious context. Lionel Blue used to be interesting and amusing is way past his best. The ones I can't stand are the "writers and religious commentators", anne atkins for example.
For those who may wish to hear a more secular take on things, the weekly "A Point of View" is usually worth listening too - although the Anne Atkins haters had better watch out as she sometimes gets a slot there too. I used to enjoy Clive James' "A Point of View" pieces but sadly he's now too ill to do these programmes.

I don't think we are 'haters' as you say, but just disagree with the need for a mandatory 'thought of the day,' besides if I do feel the need I can surely seek one out on the net!
Truth is the worst haters are often the most religious amongst us and have been for hundreds of years.
Nope, "haters" are "haters" - whether religious or secular. Religion provides a conduit for people to dislike each other - but the abolition of religion would not reduce the amount of hate. All the haters would do is find some other reason to hate other people. You can see on Internet forums how people fly off the handle on topics that have nothing to do with religion.Truth is the worst haters are often the most religious amongst us and have been for hundreds of years.
It's people that are the problem.

I have my car radio permanently set to R4 and so sometimes catch 'Beyond Belief' in the afternoons if I'm travelling. If you roll your eyes at Thought for the Day you should listen to this lot discussing earnestly how many angels could dance on the head of a pin...
That's whole half hour. Some PHers would just explode.checkmate91 said:

Argh! She's abominable - the only one I cannot listen to, the radio gets switched off as soon as her peculiar cadences and rising inflections infect the airwaves. What is it about that woman's speech patterns? She's actually more irritating than Tony Blair in speech mode.
I'd even prefer scouse or norn iron voices (and that's saying some) to her condescending tosheroo.

Very happy atheist here, but I still quite like listening to Thought for the Day. It's part of the routine really and its not like they are saying anything terribly inflammatory.
I do agree that a Humanist appearance every now and then would be a good thing for fairness to all "beliefs" though i don't actually think the moral to their story would be much different from the current crop.
Yeah I like it too. Plus if I hear it it means I'm not going to be late for work.I do agree that a Humanist appearance every now and then would be a good thing for fairness to all "beliefs" though i don't actually think the moral to their story would be much different from the current crop.
