I don't "hate hippies". From my experience, they do their thing and don't bother me.
Not sure what there is to hate about hippies
Me neither, I save my "hate" for thugs, racists and car thieves, and Chelsea fans which may be an oxymoron Not sure what there is to hate about hippies
Not exactly a PH-friendly build so expected the wrath.
I admired their perseverance and the greenhouse structure, thought his teeth and the glasshouse frontage were of a terrible design. If it had all been finished to the standard of the bedroom, and the downstairs didn't have those awful glasshouses in front of it, it might have looked quite nice.
Costing it out at about £30k was bks though as took no account of their free labour - a non-hippy couple with normal jobs may have hired people and built the complete design thing for (say) £80k within a year, but they may have earned £60k.
I'm completely at a loss as to how you couldn't completely condemn their "lifestyle choices" that resulted in this shambles. Fannying on with a tiller when a mini digger would do the job an a 10th of the time was either set up for the cameras or the epitome of their ineptitude (let's not even mention the use of an old paint tin where a shovel might be better)
There has been some stinkers over the years on GD (I didn't rate last weeks for instance) but this one has to be the most infuriating waste of time I've ever seen. That a council approved this sort of waste of energy exemplifies a lot of way is wrong with the leftist side of GB today.
(in case you didn't get it, I thought it was crap!)

I was in two minds...
on the one hand the whole 'good life' bks along with (what seemed to be) industrial scale soap-dodging and the constant preaching really got on my tits ('save the planet'? the planet'll do fine, it's us poor mooks living on it that may or may not have an issue in the centuries to come). The flip side was that I did like the look of the kid's bedroom (windows/walls) with the exception of the mud-lino floor. As a study in bloody mindedness and stupid names (not to mention a deterioration of dental health) it was interesting

Agreed. I liked the child's bedroom, especially the detail that went into the window frames (they themselves looked like trees). on the one hand the whole 'good life' bks along with (what seemed to be) industrial scale soap-dodging and the constant preaching really got on my tits ('save the planet'? the planet'll do fine, it's us poor mooks living on it that may or may not have an issue in the centuries to come). Also glad you noticed the declining dental hygiene! I said this to the wife!
Hardly the good life though is it, relying on the generosity of strangers for free labour, living in a 1 room dwelling fore years with young kids, the stress of not knowing if you can meet the planning criteria added to the stress of setting up a new small business AND building a house yourself.
Get a job, get a sensible name, get a life.
Not generally opposed to these types but they didn't choose the easy path did they!

I'm not really sure what the point of that Welsh government funded community was. We know from history and from poorer countries that people can scrape a living from smallholdings. It's not novel, and when they got the chance, most people went to cities to get better paid jobs to avoid having to do it...
You can't support 60 million people in the UK that way so its pointless for any government to get involved.
And why does anything that's called an "Eco community" ALWAYS look like a fking tip ?

I found it ironic that, despite their alternative life, they were dealing with as much red tape and stress as the rest of us do.Get a job, get a sensible name, get a life.

Simon with an 'X' ffs.
Yes, that annoyed me too, and all the other names picked from organic alphabetty spaghetti that were on at the same time. And the filling of sandbags with an old tin when they're not above using a battery drill in other bits. I wonder if he'll do a "revisited" in a few years when they might have it finished.Personally i think it made a really nice bit of land in a lovely area look like a rubbish dump. As someone said doing by using free labour from various sorts travelling the globe is kinda cheating and not to mention dangerous with children as who exactly are you allowing to share your space with? How much can you check into their history?
Not particularly bothered with someone lifestyle choice but i do think it looked like a mess. I can be part of the landscape by going for a nice trudge across the fields, it's beautiful, i don't think they gain as much as they think they do...

I found it interesting. Mostly because it led me to read about the Wales one planet development rules and ponder if it would be possible to build something which provided non third world levels of living accomadation. I think it would. The rules are that the build needs to be carbon neutral and that the smallholding provides something like 2/3rds of the occupants food needs and the basic required income to do some stuff like pay council tax and buy the food you can't grow. Guidelines say ~£3k per adult per annum. You're then free to top that income up doing whatever you like as long as it doesn't involve 'excessive travel.'.
The build itself was ridiculous. The blokes obviously got some practical skills judging by the kids bedrooms. They also had some access to cash - I suspect from parents. Tons of free labour, 5 years, no real job and they've still not finished? Not to mention that from some angles it looked like something a refugee camp dweller would be ashamed of. What were they doing for all that time?
