Do you not think Eric, that there should be a rolling dateline for the playlist?
R2 is an eccentric assortment of shows that perhaps 20 years ago had an audience, but ought to be moved sideways to another channel after a number of years?

Wright was moved from R1 to R2, shame they cant move him elsewhere. At the height of his success it wasnt his personality or ability that made him popular, it was (at the time) the funny sketches that had people listen in. Someone needs to tell him to change the record.....
I kind of agree. There should be an "Old Farts" channel - maybe Radio 2.5 where you can here pre-war (and I mean both World War 1 and 2) music as well as pre-rock and roll popular music. It's getting harder to find anyone playing Gershwin, Porter, Romberg, Rogers and Hart, proper Swing and early jazz, rag-time etc. Just because music is old does not suddenly mean it's not worth listening to. I discovered a lot of this music in my late 20s and 30s - having been into the contemporary "pop" of my teenage years - just like everybody else.

It gets good listening figures as it is the safe, middle England choice for people who have never listened to or refuse to listen to Radio 4, 6music, (or Radio 3, although I'm not a fan myself) or a, mostly poor, commercial station.

when travelling in a car without DAB in the UK, there isn't much choice of non-cheesy-commercial or boring local BBC stations if you just want music and a bit of chat.

I listen to it because it's the least worst option, I think.

Until a radio station exists which plays my preferred niche of music (never going to happen) I'm stuck with it. Although I've been experimenting with R4 recently. Radio Scotland for Off the Ball on a Saturday but that's as far as it goes. I refuse to listen to Clyde or Real because it's constant adverts for Larry's Laminate Land or whatever. Plus Clyde have some Aussie bawbag on whose voice really really grates on me. Unlistenable.

Sunday eve spannering is not compatible with Elaine Page and fking Show Tunes....take it to radio fking three or delete the archive.
We can't all like everything. As an enthusiast of show tunes, I purposefully tune into her show - not so much for her but the music.

R2 tries to cover a very broad church. Personally, I actually think it is far too "pop" these days - becoming a kind of "Radio 1/2". I really miss the fact that up until a few years ago it also included a lot of early 1950s pre rock and roll music and even music from the late 19th century and Edwardian eras. I like popular music from all time periods but I find that Radio 2 is now heavilly weighted in the post 1980s era.
Eric's HiFi

That's far too hi-tech for me.
I can not stand Elaine Page and I fking hate show tunes! It doesn't seem to matter what time I put R2 on on a Sunday, she seems to be on and how fking long is her show 5 hours?? Also she seems to have loads of time away, has she been ill?

Having said all that, it's my wife who listens to R2 I'm R4 most of the time, Planet Rock or Team Rock Radio!

Any other Planet Rock fans?

Yes and was absolutely gutted when they got taken off FM recently. I'm going to have to invest in the portable DAB radio as mentioned earlier in this thread so I can listen to it in the car. I've also noticed that Team Rock are off DAB so are only available online?

I do wonder where Steve Wright gets all of his supposed listeners from; everyone I've spoken to recently says the same thing - he was funny thirty years ago but the same 'act' stopped working about twenty years ago. I don't know anyone that still listens to him.

...and don't start me on Vine, he really is someone I would never, ever tire of punching, ever.

Chris Evans, Ken Bruce and Simon Mayo are great but apart from that it's pretty much Radio 4 or the iPod.

It's funny how those who profess to not like show tunes express their opinion in such a vitriolic way. There are lots of genres of music that I'm not mad about either (rap being the one I like least) but I don't HATE any music.

Show music encompasses such a vast array of styles from full blown opera to jazz, funk, rock, rock & roll etc that anyone saying they don't like show music perhaps doesn't actually like music.

I thought someone might have started a new thread on this but did anyone hear the Jeremy Vine piece on the unfortunate pensioner who was crushed to death when his wife exited her car without setting the handbrake or placing the autobox in Park?

If not, I urge you to listen on i-player and prepare to be astounded by a 50 yr old international journalist who appears to have never driven an automatic car and has no idea how they function.

R2 is on by default in my workplace as we have no DAB reception here in the wilds and local radio is dire but from now on I will switch off after Ken Bruce as I can no longer tolerate Vines' inane, inept, badly informed presentation.

I don't expect him to know everything about every subject, he should let the expert guests speak and stop the peurile interruptions, better to keep quiet and let people suspect you may be stupid than to open your mouth and prove it.

Todays show was the last straw, what worries me is that the Vine show is the only current affairs show that the majority listen to and is now both dumbed down and inaccurate.

Vine is actually pretty thick. You certainly get that impression from his Twitter posts and his radio show.

I've got DAB in my car and at home so never listened online, although now you mention it, I haven't been able to tune Team Rock in my new car!

Absolute radio has 80s 90s or classic rock, x fm has just become radio x with some bloke called Chris moyles taking the breakfast show slot, whoever he is.

Agree with others though that bbc radio needs a rethink as far as the main stations go.

I have already expressed my disdain for Jeremy Vine a number of times on PH and he does not improve but if you really want dire broadcasters then take a listen to vapid Sarah Cox or self possessed Vanessa Feltz but particularly Anneka Rice.

Unable to go thirty seconds without stumbling over her inane prepared script, she has no place on obscure regional radio, never mind the national network, I find it incredible that she is still on the airwaves.
It is good to see the BBC making savings. Today the lady from reception and the doorman stood in for Anika. They did make her performance seem very slick.

Let's just hope that Sam and Amy return to their normal day jobs next week.

"when did you last have the head gasket patched?"

Vines contribution to the list of questions you should ask when buying a used car.

On yesterday. He does come across as being a complete fking moron.

I also posted this very same Steve Wright question some years ago, and he's still doing the same old ste.

Another one is Moira Stuart. She's like the retarded bloke off Anchorman. Given any opportunity to comment off script she just collapses into complete jibberish.
