I used to travel from Norwich to South Wales and back on a Monday & Friday.

M11 = Accidents & Delays
A14 or M25 = Accidents & Delays
M4 = Accidents & Delays

No real alternate routes unless you wanted to take about 4 days on A & B roads.
That's you. In my case I don't commute but I drive a fair bit with work. Depending on where I am I usually have the choice of two roads home M8 or M74. Both take me to within 5 mins of home. The M8 has a bottleneck which ANY event causes a major tailback, so if I hear anything on the M8 near that area I switch to M73/M74 as appropriate.

It's always good for highland roads as well where diversions due to landslides can be 100 miles or more. Traffic news can give you the option to put off a journey, or at least fill up so you don't end up stranded making the situation worse for everyone.

We don't have many motorways in Scotland but they're normally pretty clear probably due to the lower population density and just being better drivers. tongue out Delays are unusual (unless Glasgow M8/Edinburgh bypass at 5pm) so I'll take any help going to avoid them if I can.
