I've half-heartedly tried to get my lad to watch Star Wars over the years when spotted it on the telebox. I just asked if he wants to go and watch the movie and was told no!

So, I clearly need to dedicate some father and son time to forcing him to watch the movies up to now.

But in which order? PH decides.....

Machete order.

4 2 3 5 6

Wait until they have the patience to get through 4 before going further.

I agree with this. The new trilogy was disliked by many so don't discourage him! However I believe someone merged the 1, 2 and 3 into one film which improved matters. Maybe try that?

I just sat and read ALL that! Didn't initially pay attention to the website name so nearly had to ask why 'machete'. It certainly seems to make sense, although perhaps anyone *that* emotionally involved with the franchise could argue similar for a different order.

There's a lot of good logic there. It keeps the surprises, fills in the back story, does away with episode 1 (which you could always come back to later if you really want).

As he recommends, worth finding the fan-edited versions that give nice quality visuals without the over-the-top effects that got added later.

Just make sure you watch the Despecialized Editions in machete order, these versions were crafted with more love and attention to detail than Lucas ever bestowed on his versions.

And if you discover the kid still has absolutely zero interest after trying that, then what ?

Adoption?

I can't even find 4,5,6 on DVD, think I may have lent them to a since-forgotten person. We could watch these (1,2,3) says my lad - showing enthusiasm, but better do it properly.

The middle three are good adventure films, the first three are long, dull, and lot of back story setting up and space politics.

If your son is 10 or under then I'm going to disagree with most on here. Watch 4, 5, 6, 1. The original three are great because of darth vadar. 1 is good because a kid is the hero and it has pod racing. It's that simple for children.

2 is politics and 3 is violent. It has a decapitation, the slaughter of children, full body burns and limb amputation.

Dont confuse what might hold together better as a sci-fi epic to millions of nerds around the world with something fun kids want to watch.

Watch both 'a new hope' and the sequel 'empire strikes back'.

It's a shame they didn't make any more really.

I'm going to buck the trend and say 1-6.

Yes the prequels aren't great, and I know even though they're prequels you're still meant to watch 4-6 and then 1-3 but:

Firstly the prequels aren't bad kids films (senate hearings notwithstanding) whilst they're not amazing, they're unfairly handicapped by the fact that thier most vocal critics were 30-40 year old blokes expecting perfection but more so expecting for the same magic they got when they watched the original ones as kids, it's not possible.

Secondly the prequels start very light and fun and get a little darker as they progress, easier for small kids to watch Jar Jar before building up to Carbonite freezing and lost hands.
