I enjoyed this first episode, I too was surprised so many dropped out so quick!

I suppose on camera it must be difficult to get an idea of the heat and humidity that makes it so difficult for them.

Whoops, you're correct! I was missing a connecting statement there! We were in the Ecuadorian jungle for a few days and then in the Peruvian jungle (after visiting Machu Picchu), near the Bolivian border (then we went on to the Galapagos Islands).

On topic - best programme on tv at the moment.

It's about moving forward despite what's being thrown at you. Reaction to the word of command.

Not what they were looking for there imo.

I've done my fair share of toe to toe, albeit not in a military setting, move forward without thinking and you'll catch one.

There's a little guy... 5 foot tops... Gurkha-looking. Hasn't had a direct camera on him once.

I wonder if that's because he goes through to the end, or whether they've put a 'plant' amongst the recruits like they did last series?

ETA: Not Nepalese, now I've seen him again.

Anyone who is given that respect by those guys should feel immense pride. It pained me to hear his story and feel desperately sad for his loss.

17. He was definitely a defensive sparing partner and no mention of him in the commentary!

Number 17? Yes I think so, although he looks pretty big in the shoulders and arms for a real pro soldier.

It's not used to assess how good you are at boxing. It's about how you react to getting smacked. Do you fight or flight?

So does Ant, the lead instructor. I guess civvy street allows you to 'build out'.

Having said that, there was a serving Para in my gym a while back who was comfortably pushing 120kg seated military press for reps; had shoulders like those 5 litre mini beer kegs hehe

Respectfully I disagree again sorry.

How you react to getting smacked is only one small part of it, boxing is the epitome of "controlled aggression" and a bit of movement allows you to deliver your aggression in a controlled manner.

I was just surprised that out of all them noone we saw seemed to have any experience of that physical arena, no martial artists even? Just flailing about head down.

No worries. I take your point regarding boxing. But I wasn't surprised in the way they were fighting. Just to reiterate; this is not boxing. The military refer to this as 'Milling' - it's all about the sprit of pushing forward, controlled aggression, despite the fact that you could continually get knocked on your arse. The Parachute Regiment do it as a part of their final selection and normally stick an Officer up against the biggest, hardest person they can find, in the hope that a) he'll get a pummelling, and b) still get on his feet and come forward despite slim odds of a win. You can actually get marked down for stepping back and dodging punches. It's one minute of absolute (controlled) agression.
