The bit near the end of American Beauty where Kevin Spacey, away from the ruin that is his family, is undressing Mena Suvari had me involuntarily holding my breath. Such a good film!

I hate to sound like one of those annoying film buffs, but it is a cracking film that looks at one big issue (fked up American families) and then drills down into individual stories whilst moving along seamlessly. It's a brilliant film, solid 9/10 in my opinion.

It's brilliant. I can't believe I waited ten years before getting around to seeing it. When I first watched it (with friends) I thought Spacey was hilarious, his wife a bh and his kids sulky moaners. Watching it the second time was amazing and tragic as you see everyone set on pursuing a different one of the many paths that are supposed to bring us happiness but instead bring only emptiness.

This scene from Bullit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgQfm0yW9aE
No dialogue, just rumbling V8's, moody looks and Lalo Schifrin's fantastic jazz score ramping up the tension.
When Bill Hickman puts his seat belt on, you know things are going to get pretty hairy.

The final couple of minutes from The Thing. "Why don't we just wait here for a while... See what happens...."

My all time favourite film is "Duel", not a usual choice I'm happy to admit. One of Spielberg's first directorial movies about a truck driver that terrorises a travelling salesman for little apparent reason.

There's a scene where there's a bus parked up near a tunnel and kids are running around aimlessly. This truck has gone past the salesman and the bus previously but it turns around and approaches the tunnel from the other end. Always gets my spine chilling when he flicks his lights on..... eek

Apollo 13 launch scene mentioned earlier. If you like this, try In the Shadow of the Moon. A Film4 docu-film from 2006 or so, with Apollo astronaut talking heads mixed with original footage. Intro shots of a Saturn launch really get me every time.
I'd nominate the scene in mission control whilst waiting for the spacecraft to emerge from blackout. Still gets me every time.

The incredible swimming pool scene in Let The Right One In (proper Swedish version) certainly gave me the shivers.

Bit towards the end of Blair Witch when one of the kids goes downstairs to see a friend has been made to 'face the corner'.

Hair on neck, dry mouth, holding breath etc etc

So many people missed the significance of that!!

Me and my (now hubby) had an OMG moment at that then we heard 'what...is he taking a piss' from someone in front of us!! Then the inevitable 'i don't get it'

That scene made the film for me, until then I'd been a bit disappointed with it.

"She made them stand facing the wall when she was killing the others" (or something like that)

Scared me witless and cost me several night's sleep!

I'm a massive John Carpenter fan and I don't think many other director's could make something so mundane as walking home from school along a quiet suburban street so creepy and unsettling.

Watched Fury, the Brad Pitt WW2 tank movie with the OH last night and that whole film seems to be chock full of hair raising moments, the whole sense of quite creeping menace and not knowing when it's going to kick off had my nerves on edge for most of the film.

As one of the characters stated in the film, god is rolling the dice and you just have to prey that your numbers don't come up. Have to say it was a great movie and gave a great sense of just how gut wrenchingly terrifying that job must have been.

The final "last stand" especially was epic, knowing that there is no way they could make it but hoping against hope, tense stuff indeed!

Predator when they use the mini gun in the jungle and I also like the start of Top Gun. The beginning of Blade Runner on a Plasma screen is pretty stunning too as you fly over Los Angeles.

Aliens - When the motion sensor is going off and they can't determine where the aliens are until Hicks pops his head up into the ventilation shafts.

Gladiator - The ending as Maximus finds his way through the fields to his family.

Heat - The meeting between McCauley and Hanna in the café.

Layer Cake - The drive up to Stoke Park in the RS6 with she sells sanctuary playing.

The Dark Knight - Jokers introduction and the bank robbery opening scene.

Apocalypse Now - The attack on the beach with Ride of the Valkyries (awesome in surround sound.

Behind Enemy Lines - The FA18 Hornet take off and being shot down when over Srebrenica.

Gran Torino - The tension at the end of the film is brilliant when Walt goes to intervene and end the violence.

Law Abiding Citizen - when they finally catch up with Shelton in his cell.

Tin Cup - The early morning fly over at the start of the US Open.

Taken - I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.
