What's the most depressing film you've ever watched?
Discussion
The opening and ending battle scenes of Saving Private Ryan, more so the first battle due to its visceral portrayal of something that actually happened where all those lives were destroyed. Still it is one of the all time great war films.
Escape from Sobibor, war related again but its depiction of the concentration camps was very sobering.

Time to close the thread,
I've seen 85% of the films mentioned on here, some are close others are like really??
Watch Spanish film Biutiful with Javier Bardem, it makes everyone of the above films look like disney's snow white.
Really is a look into the darkest side of the soul, a study of redemption. BE WARNED IT IS A VERY HARD AND DRAINING FILM TO WATCH, but equally there is something about it that really does have you hooked.
Definitely a film that has stayed with me and will till the end of my days.

I agree about the sheer cringe -making brilliance of 'The Offence'.
The other film that makes for wincing with disquiet is 'Shallow Grave'. I don't think it's a spoiler to point out that because of what happened and why, the protagonists fully deserve each another.
And I now can't use a cash machine comfortably after dark.

Only just thought of it; probably not the most depressing but it certainly left me depressed after I saw it at the cinema:
Prisoners with Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman
It probably didn't help that I didn't really read up much about it so had a completely different idea about what the film was going to be!!

Tyrannosaur is pretty bleak, but a great film. Definitely worth a watch particularly if your familiar with Seacroft in Leeds.
im from leeds and know Seacroft well even though i am from west leeds. and yeah have to say its worth a watch if you know the area. a bit like tina goes shopping etc. paints a bleak picture.Havoc856 said:
Truly Madly Deeply
The first time I saw that film I'd recently lost someone close to me, so it was probably not a good choice. Also, I wasn't a bit fan of Stevenson. However, her bit in front of the psychiatrist, with all the snot, tears and blaming the deceased, was just what I was going through. I nearly left the cinema at that point.
She went a bit nutty and I could empathise with the emotional ups and downs. I was well down at the end but I kept running the film through my mind in the following days and the positive points came through.
Life goes on is not much of a message but it takes a bit of accepting I found. It helped me.
Still not a fan of Stevenson.

Just reminded myself of one that is utterly, utterly sad - but a great film
"Midnight Cowboy".
Agreed, the sequence at the end when Ratso croaks on the bus and Joe Buck doesn't know what to do is pretty depressing. But great work by the two leads. Which reminds me, Jon Voight did The Champ in 1979, that was truly sad at the end, wake up Champ, wake up!"Midnight Cowboy".

The one that stands head and shoulders above there rest for me was Biutiful (with Javier Bardem)
Utterly relentless. I like bleak films but that was one I wanted to scream at the screen "Just give us something FFS"
