Try Soldier Blue for a very depressing Western, probably too old school for you youngsters, but is a very strong film, one of my favorites in a funny way...

Like the OP, "Requiem for a Dream" I can't think of another film is nearly as bleak.

The Deer Hunter has to be up there. Certainly didn't fill me with the joys of spring

Watership down is child abuse in celluloid form - I remember going to the cinema as a kid to watch it and whole place echoing with the sounds of young kids blubbing - even decades later a few line of "briiiiiiiight eyes, burning like fire" can break adults of my generation.

I generally avoid depressing films, but Watership Down, The Mist and When the Wind Blows have ruined my day in years gone by.

On The Beach. Probably bleaker than Threads in the grand scheme of things.
I don't remember the film, but the book's certainly bleak.

"The Road" is right up there, even with the positive ending - I often wonder if they made two endings and decided that the one used worked better with an audience

Following the recent thread on here, I watched the original version of Funny Games yesterday - there weren't many laughs in that!

I remember the Champ being a very sad film too - watched it as a boy and was very upset afterwards.

Threads is number 1 for feeling awful and needing a dose of disney after.

The remake\TV movie of On the Beach with Armande Assante is also awful, mainly the cyanide pill for the family bit frown

I have Grave of the fireflies still in its wrapper, cant bring myself to watch it yet as it so close to Christmas
