Deutschland 83, 86 & 89
Discussion
Braquo - also loved
Spiral - not seem but want yo
Romanzo Criminale - also loved
Mammon - not heard of, weirdly.
In fairness, it's nothing really like any of those except in the sense that it's equally well shot and put together. I'm enjoying it a lot but I spent a lot of time in Germany as a child during the era so it has particular appeal.

I do too. Le Carré is probably in my top three favourite authors.D83 isn't really Le Carré-esque though. Not nearly as dark. More Mission Impossible on a student film club budget.
I'm still thoroughly enjoying it though!
It could get still darker. There have been a few AIDS references. Edel's wife asked her daughter if she was using condoms and the daughter replied that AIDS only affects Schwule, doesn't it? Tischbier clearly sleeps
around and I suspect Edel's son may end up with AIDS from Tischbier.

Really liking it so far.
Had an odd moment when my 9 yr old son came in as I was watching the scene where he breaks into the office to photograph the documents.
Cue having to explain why he couldn't just get out his phone, photograph it and email it on to whomever... So he's a german pretending to be a german to spy on a german so that he can tell a german

Germany was only unified for the first time in 1871 and it has a fair collection of strong regional dialects as a result. Although these days, pretty much everyone can shift to accented standard German (Hochdeutsch - which is taught in school) to make themselves mutually understood.
I remember being in a youth hostel several years ago and someone from north Germany was having a conversation with an Austrian in German. After a while they started talking in English, so I asked if they were doing so for my benefit. Turns out it was easier than trying to understand each other in German.roughly speaking low mid and high German from North to South
Gets interesting when they get smart and use all three to confuse their poor Gastarbeiter..
btw one good phrase to remember is (roughly) Sie meine Hand zu sehen

That's exactly what I thought. It's not a mirror image of TTSS of course, but what it shares is the slightly grimy unglamorous background and the way you have to watch it closely as every detail matters. I also think that it is very well acted. The other series that it brings to mind is Breaking Bad.
Is it historically accurate? No. Is it an exercise in realism? No. Is the continuity perfect in every respect? No. Is it like Germany was in 1983? No. Does any of that matter? No.

I wouldn't want to watch every programme subtitled, but I don't mind it. It makes you concentrate! You can't be reading or browsing the web at the same time that's for sure.
I can recommend Matrioshki if you like Eastern European dancing girls in Belgium.
I struggle to get my girlfriend into any TV series because she's always buried in her laptop looking at Facebook, however because you have to pay attention and look at the screen to understand the plot fully she's got quite into this series!I can recommend Matrioshki if you like Eastern European dancing girls in Belgium.
