Ok, Li-ion then. smile

(I guess I just displayed my ignorance there. biggrin )

There didn't seem to be major changes to the returning robots like Terrorhurtz or Behemoth. Although they were a lot faster so I'm guessing that with changes in batteries etc. they are a lot more powerful now than they were back in 2004.
Yes. There have been massive improvements in battery technology in the past 12 years, with powerful Li-ion and LiPo batteries. Some of the bots were running lead acid batteries from mobility scooters, as I recall, back in the day.
Would they allow them to use LiPo aren't they inherently unstable and don't like extremes of temperature of being bashed about?
No idea...on BB they seem to have had a few eruptions when battery packs have been punctured or outright ripped apart. Not so sure on the cost of Li-ion vs Li-po, I thought the latter really helped you with utlising space. Perhaps something they don't really need on a fighting robot.

I do like both shows though. BB is very polished and slick and most of the competitors are similarly so. Notice when they come out onto the floor that they often have a little accompanying graphic with their sponsors on.... often tools suppliers or electronics manufacturers etc. So it seems a lot more money going around in BB and I think it shows in the robots; many of them seem very highly engineered indeed.

RW by contrast still exudes that men in sheds vibe which I think is typically British and absolutely bang on.

Roll on next week.

Too much dross and drivel in between the battles. i don't want to look round the pits or ponder on why x or u lost. Just get on with it!!!
fking hell, haha it would be pretty damn thin with random buggies running into eachother with no back stories.

Was a casual fan back in the day, but I was genuinely excited about seeing it again. Great to see Razr back on who was a stand out robot from bakc in the day, although was gutted when he cocked up the first rond and fell into the pit. Plenty of good robot destruction through the show though.

Agree with other comments about it feeling a bit drawn out. I reckon they have a great 40 minute show, but it's stretched out to an hour to fill the time slot, and it slows the porceedings down too much.

Finally got round to watching this, and it was great! Having a mini league instead of a knockout gives them all a a chance to get a good match in, and means more fighting to watch - BattleBots is totally unwatchable on youtube with all the WWE-style crap - Skip to the fights and there are only four, short battles in an hour!

New Robot Wars has got it spot on with just enough chatting in the pits to let you care about the teams - Plus plenty of action, no-one getting too serious about it, teams helping each other backstage to keep the show going, it really was as good as, if not better than, it used to be when we were younger - Now just need to get all the Little Smudgers hooked on it!

I just watched it too, really like the league format, gives everyone a fairer chance rather than the odd fluke loss, presuming they get through the manic first round anyway.

They do little a little background music on during the fights though, it makes it more exciting and I found it lacking.

Arena looks nice as it doesn't give the mega flippers a quick win as a big chunk of the sides are sealed in, so takes better driving to flip people out the arena. Bit dissapointed Sgt Bash isn't in it though, the flames added a bit of drama even if it did little in the way of destruction.

Maybe in a couple of years I might enter it again, as I enjoyed it back in the day but never had the money to make a heavyweight so only competed in lighter classes.

The sponsors were never allowed before due to it being on the BBC, as advertisers could drop money on a few teams to get some very cheap prime time advertising which wouldn't benefit the BBC, I assume it's the same reason none will have anything like that now.

More untested robots this week, robots that can't drive on flat land and robots that destroy their weapons as soon as they use them in anger.

Does anyone know the reason why Thor has that blunt hammer rather than a pointed one? Surely a pointed one would do more damage?

Trying to shock wiring loose through impact rather than pierce.

During the Thor 'bio' in the garage he was holding a pointed hammer...
