Possibly the most graphically brutally violent film I've ever seen. I took the Mrs and she would have walked out if I hadn't been there! Not a lot of story, rediculous recovery by the main character, nice panoramic scenery shots, the bear scene (CGI) was well done, difficult understand in a lot of places, characters lacked depth, too long....................................6/10
Brilliantly acted and beautifully shot, but ultimately it was over long, let down by the script and the storyline and frankly one of the most boring movies I've ever seen.
As a fan of Peter Greenaway I'm not adverse to less than linear movies and visually driven narrative, but this was simply worthy but dull. If it can't immerse me I pity the average audience who think a sophisticated movie is something like X Men.
It will likely clear up at the Oscars, but when was the last time a truly great movie won a hatful of Oscars?
I found myself wishing the bear had won out and we could all have gone to the pub instead!

Ill be honest, I thought it was one of the most over rated films I have seen in many many years. No doubt LDC will get his much wanted Oscar for it but thats more because of the injustice of previous awards than this film.
I thought it was massively overrated too. I simply had to empathy with the lead character and couldn't really care what happened to him. el stovey said:

I thought the scenes where they showed some 'mystical' connection to his dead wife fell flat. just didn't work. Also, his son. Again, couldn't care less.Moominator said:
Did they pick the right lead/actor?
I think LdeC is a great actor. To me, the problem was character development rather than casting.Perhaps the problem is that he's injured very early in the film, If we got to know him better first then we might give more of a toss about his outcome? Having all the dreamy sequences and links to has past during the film and after the bear attack, all seemed to be in the wrong order.

More holes than a colander , If you are making a period film at least give a nod to reality , as has been already , multi shots from a single shot musket and hand gun .
Survival from massive injuries from a bear attack including a possible broken ankle ,surely setting fire to gunpowder in your throat would gas you to death , then a dive from a cliff into a tree and walk away.
Long periods immersed in freezing water without succumbing to hypothermia .Missed 75% of dialog due to poor sound recording , tried all settings on sound system to no avail .
An unbelievable raft of awards from the luvvies , please !!!
The only saving grace was the amazing photography , leaving me wondering on occasions , how did they do that . or perhaps CGI has a lot to answer for
Glad it was a part of a 3 for £20 in HMV
