No thread?

Fairly formulaic in that it seems a big advert for the RN, but quite enjoyable none the less.

We must have some ex-matelots here who will surely chime in with some dits on their time at Raleigh too.

Cheers Chief.

Watched it, Seems to have gone a little softer from when I went through 13 years ago. It also seems they are focusing on the struggling recruits rather than the actual training itself. Obviously that makes good TV I suppose.

The Drill Instructor needs to lose some weight for one, Not exactly promoting a fit, fighting force.

Catching up on this and was thinking the same, why are so many of the instructors fat?

Having spent a decade in the RN I feel qualified to answer.....its beer.

On a ship the mess is just beds and a bar. The bar is very cheap, however you don't pay for beer you just add it to your tab. When you get paid your bar bill is deducted from your pay.

When you get to a port you head for the nearest bar and drink beer. If you don't pick up a woman then you drink more beer. The next day you get up with a hangover, have a fried breakfast and start the same cycle.

I imagine it would be a great advantage if you fell in the water - you'd have positive buoyancy, and a layer of insulation.

And now for one of my favourite Spike Milligan jokes:

I applied to join the Navy. They asked "Can you swim?". I replied "Why? Haven't you got any ships?".

Amazing that the Navy agree letting this air.

The DS are somewhat soft and the recruits are the result.

I thought it was a bit sad really....not that it happened but that it caused such a stink....FFS this is the forces not the boyscouts.....just a bunch of young guys letting off steam......people are far too twitchy these days looking for a scandal where one just does not exist.

More due to the fact under 18s were involved I think, and rightly so. The Navy is effectively their "guardian" until they reach 18.

Well it's a rather odd way to let off steam!

I have been " Guardian" to many junior rates in my time......and more than a few "pissed out of their tree" junior officers...in the real world this would have been laughed away....I suspect the moral outrage was rather stage managed for the camera.

Youve got to laugh because it's the Navy and the obvious connotations that go along with that. But in reality, I agree with the above. The young lads on my basic did the same thing. There was no harm in it, not the way Id choose to blow off steam but it worked for them. When you're hanging and tired you sometimes do things that dont really make sense to someone in a 'right' state of mind.

But yes, a night with the booties will make this look very normal indeed. Or any infantry unit to be honest!

Really felt for then guy who had the pregnant girlfriend, she was really annoying and so obviously didn't want him to go into the Navy; she finally got her wish too.

My thoughts too. I remember him stating that he'd been in the application process for 3.5 years, and low and behold, she miraculously becomes pregnant a couple of months before his entry date.
