My thoughts too. I remember him stating that he'd been in the application process for 3.5 years, and low and behold, she miraculously becomes pregnant a couple of months before his entry date.

that'll turn out to the biggest regret of his life - he was clearly cut out for it too (apart from underpants labelling...)

The GF came across as extremely selfish, even the wife; who would have a better understanding of the woman's side of things, especially a pregnant woman, thought she was awful and we both said "I bet he quits".

Is it possible to join the Navy or indeed any of the armed forces without being part of that laddish behavior?

All I ever see on these type of shows, and from the media is squaddies and the like behaving like that. I can't imagine everyone is like that, but it's all that is ever portrayed. Were the stiff faced officers all laddish hooligans in their younger days too?

These programmes involve months of filming condensed into an hour. The film makers would have thought Christmas had come early when this happened. Training is 90% hard work with 10% trying to hang on and keep up. Letting off a bit of steam now and again can be a good way to relax. The fact they're under so much pressure can make it seem more extreme.

I've not seen the show, but did 8 years in the RN.

In general new recruits will be laddish because that's what they are. Basic training weeds out a lot of people that don't fit, and you end up with a group of like minded fairly self confident blokes in a big group. NCO's are promoted from that group, so are older and generally more mature (or try to be).

Officers (even new recruits) are less so because generally they will have had a higher level of education before entry so are older. Officer training will also curb behaving like tts in front of the ratings.

I've met plenty of boring people across the 3 forces, they don't make good tv, so you don't see them!

The laddish behavior is what gets you through the times when you are cold, wet, tired and hating life.

Have had plenty of times on exercise (I'm a soldier) where we have ended up as a group laughing hysterically at something that really isnt funny, when you tell people who arent in the forces they dont get it!

This! I remember my dad being outraged by the naked roll mat fighting of the RM as I was going through the application process. "So you want to join those idiots?". Me: "yep".

Its no worse than things I did playing youth rugby TBH. I did join up later in life so I guess I was all ready fed up with drinking and acting a prat anyway. Sometimes I felt like I missed out by being the sensible one but I still have a decent collection of "chick run ashore rig" some of which was made my my mother in law.

Some officers can be strict but RM ones seem to be more chilled out and friendly with the lads especially if they are quite young or have been commissioned from the ranks. There's always videos going round of our boss necking off with our CSgt after we've been out.

Matelots love a beer almost as much as they love a we house. The new ones are not shy of a bit of phys though.

Personally think the reaction to the "shower party" was influenced because the cameras were there. It, whatever it was, happened, some footage or knowledge of the incident was out there outside the RN. Now imagine the scenario if there was someone who wanted to stir it, for example the Top Gear n-word that never was.

On other matters, Cherie Blair's younger and almost impossibly even more annoying younger sister, agree with observations on here, felt for the poor guy, but fair play to him for being there for his family.

At the disciplinary board it seems they focused on the issue of humiliating an individual in order to gain favour with the group. I'm guessing mateyboy's dismissal was an effort to obliterate any hint of a bullying culture, especially with the cameras in house.

I think that he was trying to fit in with the big boys....maybe felt bullied himself after the flip flops and gas masks episode and was trying to be one of the boys rather than the target?
