Karl from the job centre (Good to see that promotion across departments within the civil service is possible!).
Wasn't the Asian guy, Olivia Coleman's sidekick, also from the job centre?
Yep, the Fraud Inspector, like I said smile

He was also River's replacement partner.

....And looking slightly better than when he had his eye gouged out in Utopia....

What is so odd about Laurie is that as a young man he was not especially good looking -or sounding. He was vaguely thyroid -eyed and generally lightweight , if excellent as people like Bertie Wooster. So where did the gravel voiced hunk appear from ?

Really enjoyed Part One.

I rationalised the rather OTT Shopping List as either been done by some junior who was told to simply type up a convincing looking list of weaponry or that it was made deliberately over the top to avoid the necessity of having a character say something like "my God it's a list of weapons for sale!!!!"

I rather hope that the "Avro Vulcan" was a production "In-Joke"?

Love Tom Hiddleston but he really ain't pulling off that bad boy role he's trying to portray in Devon.

Roper's Majorcan villa must be a conference centre or hotel - when we first saw it there were classic cars lined up in the yard with racing numbers on the sides. Later we saw a silver XK120 coupe in the same place.

The venue for a Majorcan classic car rally?

There were a few things in that that I didn't understand.

Ah well, I'll continue reading the novel (I'm very slightly behind the TV series but will probably finish this week) and I'm sure it'll be clear.

It did jar somewhat. However I am enjoying it and wish it was bingeable.

I thought he was very good. Enjoying the whole thing, can't fault anything so far.
And yes, there was a dark red classic on the forecourt, something like a Ferrari 166 or Aston Martin DB2

Privately-owned according to the Internet eek

"The good news is that Roper’s opulent lair really is a holiday home; the bad news is that it’s not available to rent – even if you’ve cash to splash like him.
Bier wanted Roper to reside on an island as he does in le Carré’s novel. “There is something about islands – the closeness to water everywhere,” she says. “It’s an old fortress on top of a cliff with a fantastic view but it still has all the trappings of a holiday villa like a beautiful pool.”
In fact, the 17th century fort has two pools, seven villas in the grounds and over 25,000 sq ft of immaculately manicured terraces and gardens. La Fortaleza overlooks the popular family resort Port of Pollenca in northern Mallorca and is Spain’s most expensive property. And the owner really is a Brit: a British banker bought it for between £30 and 35 million in 2011, according to local newspaper Ultima Hora."

I finally remembered last night who Roper's right hand man, the short guy with the real dark edge to him reminded me of:

Tom Hollander yes

What's more disconcerting is his best roles always seem to have been "The Blithering Idiot" - there's a fantastic feature length "Thick of It" about a dossier relating to going to war. He just cracks me up in that every time he's on screen!!

Gripping stuff, but I think Pine's method of obtaining a cover name is a bit flaky - obviously things have tightened up at the Passport Office since "The Day of the Jackal", but to get a passport in the name of someone who's still alive, and is a father to boot, is just asking for trouble, surely? Not to mention that he just stumbled on him at random in the first place. Unless of course he can convince Roper that that is a perfectly plausible way to behave for a criminal on the run.

I don't think he stumbled on him at random, it was all planned out.
Pine stole the money, does on the run as the 2nd name then gets involved with bad people/drugs trade, bangs the bird steals the ex-boy friends identity (who might actually be dead anyway). I know she said she could cook, was the boyfriend a chef? that would explain why they took his identity. Gets the passport which is easy if you are actually working for the government. Goes to work in bar.
