I didn't realise we had a new 2016 thread - I was posting to the old 2014/2015 one. I wondered why it was so quiet!

Anway, I watched the latest one last night - the 1970's Honda CVCC

God, that was superficial. The trick carburettor and pre-combustion chamber was interesting, but I was disappointed when Edd made a template for a repair panel, started cutting the sheet steel and then suddenly.. boom... it was all formed and ready to fit. I would have liked to have seen that being made.
Likewise everything was very rushed, glossed-over, and blink-of-an-eye. Engine out and in bits in a matter of moments, likewise stripped down to a bare shall for painting in a flash.

Ok, granted there are only so many times we can see Edd do this kind of thing so there is an element of "you've seen me do this before so I won't bother showing you again" but even so.

I'm also really not at all convinced about Mike doing half of the spannering by fitting the O2 sensor and gauges. I found it rather incongruous that Mike was doing things that we would normally expect Edd to do. Is Edd being phased out or something?

I also thought it rather odd they spent so much time and effort adding those extra instruments and the O2 sensor when the car was clearly destined to go to the Honda museum. It was clear from the "haggling" at the end that it had all been pre-arranged. Or so it seemed to me.
So why spend time and money making the car non-original?

And the whole hypermiling thing was just pants, and went on far, far too long.

Overall, it was an episode that had a lot of potential and mostly failed to deliver on it.

Yeah i noticed that, looked like something binding but the whole wheel seemed to shudder when it was rolling backwards.
Tfft. I thought my eyesight was going. Not their finest programme by far.

I find myself rewinding more and more of the new WD series because I've drifted off or started playing with my phone, it's just too boring and has no depth. The scripted chat was charming in the old days, now it's boring. If I want to wish I lived in the US and play with American cars I watch Fast n Loud, if I want to see cool retro cars being fixed and restored I used to watch WD but SOS is by far the best show of the type. The few full restos Fuzz has done this series are stunning.

And as every Facebook comment, forum thread etc says, WE WANT TO SEE THE BLOODY RESTORATION IN MORE DETAIL!!! Why these shows can't do this even as an online only short I don't know.

I'm starting to find it a bit of a chore to put up with the obvious scripted stuff just to get to the more interesting content, and I'm on the cusp of just not bothering any more.

It's true what they say about familiarity breeding contempt.....

Agree with most of the previous comments regarding this being one of the worst episodes. I too fast forwarded large chunks of this which I have never done before. Wheeler Dealers is rapidly going downhill which is a shame and in a misguided attempt to freshen up the formula they have only succeeded in ruining it.
Hope someone from the production company reads these comments and takes note.

Except the series is already in the can, so no change in the short term, then.

How quickly folks forget how awful the early ones were.

Funny you should say that, but on the old 2014/2015 thread that I was erroneously posting on, I recently said:

I watched a few episodes from series 1 and series 2 yesterday, and I can't believe how long they spend on really quite trivial things. And Edd talks the viewer through it all in way more detail - like it's a tutorial for DIY mechanics. Something we would expect to see on YouTube these days.
Just serves to show how far the show has come, and how much it has changed.

Just to add, I don't mean that was necessarily a good thing. I actually found the S1 episodes painfully boring. Obviously there is a sweet spot somewhere between the two.

I've learnt so much stuff from Edd in the earlier series of WD.

I don't mind Mike at all, he seems like a really nice chap, but he now just plays on the silly-cheeky-chappy far too much. Edd is now playing the I'm-really-grumpy persona trying to not get annoyed by Mike's silly jokes and banter...

I didn't mind the changes in the most recent seasons, but this latest season has gone properly off the rails now.

I've just seen the Honda CVCC episode.

Sweet Jesus fking Christ! Are they actually taking the piss now? A whole episode about increasing fuel economy, include a whole section driving with some numb nuts thinking 5 seconds ahead whilst everyone else swerves to avoid him.

What next, fast and loud using hybrid engines instead of V8s?

Worst episode ever. Ed must have spent about 6 hours doing all that, where the other 20 went I'm not sure!

Well I thought it was fascinating - who'd have thought you could save fuel by not accelerating hard, coasting down hill and not braking away energy when cornering? Er.. every sensible driver ever!

The fact that it was a boring Jap stbox from the 70s didn't help but normally the Edd oily bits are interesting whatever the car. Shame they were so short.

Mike is going from genuine, down-to-earth enthusiast to irritating cockney gobste

I watched the old MX5 episode with a slim Brewer and young ED. They should stick to the formula more of Ed and less of Brewer works

That was a particularly poor episode.

The only interesting bit was the couple of minutes about the carburettor and cylinder head design. It's a concept being used to boost thermal efficiency currently in Formula One.

The tyre pressure gauges, vacuum gauge and fuel/air ratio gauge were complete crap and detracted from the car.

One other thing I forgot to mention. Mr. Hypermiler claimed he invented the term "hypermiling" in 2008. This must come as somewhat of a surprise to the chaps who used to take part in hypermiling contests as far back as the 1970's. smile

They were called "economy runs" back then.

Some info on the word "hypermiling" here - http://www.macmillandictionary.com/buzzword/entrie...

I'm currently watching the "Trading Up" series on Quest.

The continual conversion of every price into dollars is doing my head in.
