Much as I like Ratcliffe (and both his and Maconie's books rare excellent reads) I do sometimes wonder how Mark got through his first radio audition as his Emm..err.. ermm...uh.. delivery is certainly idiosyncratic - but it just makes me smile. Anybody who can riff about the sheer perfection of Benmore Tench's name is OK with me
I think for me it's because it sounds like you're listening to a real person, rather than some polished 'tony blackburn' style DJ.

Mayo's good but that sports sidekick he has on with him is a massively irritating tosser when he starts getting all strident and opinionated.
Dr Mosh! Never gets old, the only acceptable reason to be late home on a Wednesday. Muppets really does need retiring though.

Ooh don't get me started on my man Tony, he was the highlight of my Saturday afternoons until the BBC binned him.

"Frankly...." is his favourite opening word to many things. fk off, Matt.
Quite refreshing though to hear Richard Bacon whilst he's covering for Simon. Likes Richard's BBC R5 podcasts (I live abroad). Maybe he can replace Simon & co full-time?

I really disliked Bacon when he took over Mayo's Radio 5 afternoon slot. The programme had a strong current affairs content. The problem was that Bacon seemed to know 100% nothing about 100% everything.

That is the one programme I really cannot stomach more than 5 seconds off. The inane wittering drivel is just unlistenable. Well, that and the godawful jazz programme with that tedious midget

I let him off with Mosh because it's a character and it's only a couple of mins a week. Problem is he talks like that all the time as himself, and sounds like a while doing it. He's Mayo's Comedy Dave.

Bacon has always been Captain Lightweight. Another BBC droid, which is why he gets the work.

That & the silly voices to dogs that may be listening..."Walkies",and a squeaky toy, just to get them going mad at the radio. Woman needs sectioning!
RadMac is the best for me,they should go back to R2 & replace Wright

He did quit after his 5 Live job got relocated to Manchester. I don't mind him, not sure the yawnfest that is Radio 5 was ever the right gig for him.

He's awful!! How they can put him in Simon Mayo's slot, when Mayo does such I good job, is unbelievable. The worst is Feltz by a mile - at least it makes me get out of bed but the ensuing rage isn't worth it...

I actually really like most of R2, I have it on most days in the background. Maybe, at 50 something, they were the people I have moved with in my listening?

Jeez no, irrespective of the method of his going, he truly was awful.

My weekday alarm wakes me to the sound of Vanessa Feltz, her insistent tone and machine gun delivery ensure I don't drift off back to sleep, the woman sounds as if she might have eaten an amphetemine soaked thesaurus, unbearable.

Apparently she achieved a double first in English at Cambridge, believable as she races to yammer out every known word before handing over to Evans.

In balance though she seems pretty clued up on serious subjects and I don't mind at all when she takes over if Vine is away,

In this slot she is much better, no gabbling here, probably because she has something of substance to talk about instead of just filling airtime between songs.

I would not mind if she took over from Vine permanently as her interviewing technique and real world awareness are streets ahead of the embarrassing Vine.

Absolutely - she is far better in that slot than Vine.

The Steve Right show just feels so false. His interviews - don't know how he gets away with it. They also have a really bad habit on that show of sharing spoilers.

RE the Lisa Tarbuck show - I used to work that evening and was generally driving when she was on and I enjoyed her show, don't listen as often now but I found her style and enthusiasm quite infectious at work.

The Dermot O'leary show is also excellent.

Really need to do something about Desmond Carrington on a Friday. I'm sure there are lots of people who like his show but it just does not sit well after Mayo.

Agree with you on Steve Wrights interviews, they are incredibly short, and consist mostly of him telling the guest how great and hard working they are.

Lisa Tarbuck's target audience appears to be menopausal women stood at the AGA after hosting a church hall coffee morning. I don't like Alan Carr on the TV, but his radio show with Mel Boddingtons was brilliant.

Dermot O'Dreary is just tedious to me - a constant flow of dull acoustic tunes. Just not my thing, although his pun titled slots (Danny Dyer's Male voice choirs etc.) were quite amusing.

Desmond Carrington is surely a 26 year old just taking the piss.
