I used to think Steve Wright was OK until I had to listen to it every day at work, and it eventually drove me to hatred. On the surface it appears a bit of jolly, light-hearted fun but I quickly realised it is a tedious, formulaic exercise in turning up.

Wright's contribution is to read things out. That's it. It's as if his career has been refined to the minimum effort required and spent to stay employed. There's no wit, insight or effort. Love or hate Moyles, it always seemed he loved the craft and put the work in behind the scenes to learn as much about it as possible.

As soon as I noticed Wright was simply turning up and ticking the boxes I decided to put as much effort into listening as he did to broadcasting, and switched over.

Yet people listen. I don't get the apparent need for radio shows to be endlessly repetitive. Radio features often run for years, even decades without change. It's bizarre to me but maybe it offers a sense of security and familiarity that keeps people tuned in.

As a side note, isn't it also odd how angry radio presenters can make us. They rarely say or do anything really offensive but can still drive us into a rage. I wonder what the psychology of it is.

Often the shows are eponymous. A radio show reflects that persons personality and their personality drives the tone of the show - if the personality grates on you, but for what ever reason you don't feel like you have an alternative but to suffer through it, you're going to get angry about it sooner or later.

I cannot stand the man. Especially his 'singing'. For a guy of serious financial means (£440k p.a apparently) he is one scruffy, sorry looking individual.

How I managed a reply about Steve Wright without swearing is baffling to me, 'cause when I stumble upon one of his shows I get very creative in that department !

I've just read that article/attack on him and his lifestyle, and much as his radio shows may be rubbish I actually find that really sad. He obviously has several mental problems and once off air, if that article is true, has nothing else in his life. Maybe the reason he has been kept on by the BBC for so long is that they have recognised that on air is the only time he is happy and comfortable in life, and perhaps if they do let him go they are worried about what might happen to him. frown

The most formulaic DJ I recall was Gary Davies on radio 1 from 1984 to 1991 he did the same show. I was a delivery driver at the time and I was hooked, the same people on the quiz all week, the sloppy bit, the oldies always at the same time meant I planned my day around it.

Sad bd hey ! Anyone know the name of the quiz ? Something with almost intellectual in it

The article was a typically nasty tabloid hatchet-job. Notwithstanding, there's no getting away from the fact that Wright is a deluded has-been, and should have gone from prime-time long ago.

Whilst his bosses may be concerned about his mental well-being (and there is no evidence that they are), it isn't the role of the BBC to employ the 'care in the community' types for any longer than they add value to the public. In my view, his days were done in the 90s, and he should not be paid more than 400k of public money for the regurgitated, US-derivative rubbish he pumps out here. The sooner he goes, the better.

wow, a lot of really nasty people on here. SW is middle of the road. If you don't like him/it, please do not force yourself to listen. Christ, get a life.

I remember his afternoon show on Radio 1. I used to come home from school and listen to it. Characters like The Perv and Linda Lust made it seem like an amusing sketch show. His current R2 show doesn't have that edge, though I find him unoffensive enough on my supermarket run after work on a Monday if some drug dealer 'music' forces me to switch over from R1.

Ooh Gary Davis. Day to day challenge or something.

To be fair, all radio shows have exactly the same things (features, quizzes, traffic, sport etc) at exactly the same time day after day and so they're all formulaic. The only difference is the bits of banter between records (or over the records in Steve Wright's case). None of this, of course, should detract from the fact that Steve Wright can stick his seriousjockin' up his arse.

I've only listened a few times but I don't mind the Steve Wright slot, having listened to many a "Steve Wright in the Afternoon" in my day. I assume the Serious Jockin' bit is a parody, which may be a subtlety some others haven't grasped?

I quite liked the Tony Blackburn slot too until he was given the boot. The replacement is nowhere near as good.

Still miss Tommy Vance on Friday Night Rock and Fluff Freeman on Saturday Night Rock. Plus the unavailability of Jazz FM on normal FM. And Vibe 105-108 broadcast from Bury St Edmunds I think?

Moaning about what he gets paid, it's all relative. I don't think £450k is a fortune in the great scheme of things. No figures to hand but that's a lot less than Johnathon Ross (who I haven't liked for a long time) used to get. The ginger gimp got £600k just to do the One Show on friday evening.

I bought a new head unit yesterday with DAB just so I can avoid this drivel from now on.

I've even started my own Steve Wright thread on here in few years ago, prompted by him being away and Mark n Lard, amongst others guested the slot. It was infinitely more entertaining.

The only thing that will get him off the radio will be a visit from the grim reaper.

Hi Steve. Don't worry, it's nothing personal. Like any form of media it's a matter of taste and a lot of people presumably still tune-in otherwise you'd be off the air. It's just that some of us here are expressing that we don't understand your appeal.
