I really don't get R2s demographic sometimes. They're currently doing a big puff with loads of adverts in Evans show for an exciting new series - "reliving the music of the fifties!" Bloody hell - my mum was too young to be in to the music of the fifties and she's about to turn 70! What percentage of their listenership do they think are going to be excitedly tuning in for this? (Or asking the care home nurse to retune the radio for). Friday nights is another one - now what you could be doing there is having a fantastic retro dance music show - from Disco up to the 90s - lots of classic Friday night tunes for the generations that grew up with it. Instead there's some decrepit old fart who sounds like Tommy Cockles from The Fast Show who plays organ music and showtunes from Rogers and Hammerstein. It's bizarre

You don't have to like music that existed only when you were alive.

I like all sorts of music - from classical to fairly modern. Having a spread of programmes covering a spread of music is what Radio 2 should be all about. Let the commercial; and "pop" channels concentrate on the "cool" and "modern" stuff. That's what they were always for. Radio 2 is the perfect platform to introduce all sorts of popular music from all eras to a wide audience. I'd probably never have discovered great song writers like Gershwin, Porter and Sammy Kahn or great singers like Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davies Junior, Ella Fitzgerald etc if it hadn't been for Radio 2.
And yet, all of those artistes were at their most popular before I was born.

I "discovered" classic rock and roll as a teen in the 70s and I still love it - so I'll be looking forward to this new "50s" show (they've had many 50s themed shows over the years - this is just the latest).

Thing is, 7pm on a Friday evening is when people want "something for the weekend", not Desmond bloody Carrington and his dusty collection of leftovers from the Darby and Joan club Christmas dinner dance.
Trevor Nelson is a good host and would be ideal - move Carrington to Sunday afternoon and do away with Elaaaaaaaaine Paaaaaaaaaaaaaige and the white noise that is Paul o'Grady.

I cannot stand the man. Especially his 'singing'. For a guy of serious financial means (£440k p.a apparently) he is one scruffy, sorry looking individual.

How I managed a reply about Steve Wright without swearing is baffling to me, 'cause when I stumble upon one of his shows I get very creative in that department !

I'm not a fan of Steve Wright but that article is just plain nasty. Although I am surprised that the Express didn't manage to squeeze in a reference to Princess Diana.

Listening to Zoe Ball atm, standing in for Ken Bruce (who I like)...she really is a breath of fresh air, friendly, enthusiastic, just what you want in a radio presenter.

Wonder how nmany times Steve Wright will mention Serious jockin' (no g by the way) before Friday?...My guess is it will be into double figures...biggrin

Big show
ffs
The terrible disco hits of the 70s and Wrighty's style of presentation were the backdrop to my youth. As a consequence, I dont mind listening to his show now and again. I even liked 'Ask Elvis' when he that was on.

There, I feel better now that's out in the open.

Obviously Anna Pukas has been 'touched' by Steve Wright in places that seriously annoy her?

In that article he sounds like a diva, but I would guess earning that sort of dosh for so long and being constantly told you are wonderful would lead to that sort of attitude.

I've long thought that this is a strange piece of programming. You have the excellent Simon Mayo on with his request show getting people in the mood for a great weekend (many of the callers are people on long drives to their weekend events) and then the whole vibe runs aground with Desmond Carrington and Friday Night Is Music Night!!
Radio 2 is the perfect place for those two shows and I have no issue with them, but surely Friday evening is not the place for them in the schedule these days?

Back to the original post - Steve Wright, time to move on to local radio somewhere. 35 years of the same show? Enough now!!

Scheduling Radio 2 can't be easy.

Radio 1 has to appeal to 16-25 year olds or so.

Radio 2 has to appeal to 25-100 year olds.

There probably isn't much of a crossover in the musical taste of a 30 year old and an 80 year old.

He can take Simon Mayo with him. Hopeless, the pair of them.

I fcensoredg detest Steve Wright with a passion!
He's just so dated now and well past his best.

As far as I'm concerned he's a lazy, sycophantic dinosaur who is totally up himself, don't even get me started on the stupid 'possy' constantly blowing smoke up his arse too.

Does anybody still listen to him? Surely the BBC could find someone better with a fresher approach.

Is it true he's earning over £400k per yeareekeekeek

I also hate the way he reads out the emails saying "Hi Steve lovin' the show etc etc etc"
Why doesn't he read out the ones saying "Hi Steve, hate your stupid show and by the way you're a total C**T!!"

The ironic thing is that Carrington USED to have a Sunday slot. Sunday on Radio 2 is when they pull in some of their biggest audiences so poor old Des got shunted into what is actually one of their "dead zones" from an audience point of view.

The problem Radio 2 has is it has to different to Radio 1, so Radio 1 does the friday night party stuff. They clearly don't mind a bit of crossover, both breakfast shows presented by annoying s for example.

It's a pity 6 Music isn't as interesting in the week as it is at weekends. Keaveney, Laverne, Lamacq and Lard leave me cold.

Heard Lauren the other day and she kept going on about where you can buy the music she's playing, is it always like that?

I'm not sure what 6M has at the weekends that's significantly better than the weekday crew, who all play a decent mix of new and classic indie (broadest sense) stuff. Apart from Iggy of course, the utter ledge that he is. Huey and Cerys are great but I wouldn't want to listen to them every day. Gilles Peterson is truly terrible, but that's just cos I don't like his kind of music. So I don't listen to it.

The only real cocksocket on 6M is Don "But enough about me - what do you think about me?" Letts. Can't stand the self-aggrandising twunt.

It's just a really dull weekday line up. No real individual personality or attitude and they all play the same of music.

Weekends - Iggy Pop, Huey, Cerys, Craig Charles, Peterson, Tom Robinson all good and all different.
