I keep a DAB in the utility for the dog when I'm out but, when I listen to music now....its an album....properly....on vinyl.

I cannot stand the man. Especially his 'singing'. For a guy of serious financial means (£440k p.a apparently) he is one scruffy, sorry looking individual.

How I managed a reply about Steve Wright without swearing is baffling to me, 'cause when I stumble upon one of his shows I get very creative in that department !

An interesting but customary innacurate article. "On air he has always had his "posse". Members include Gervase the hairdresser, Damian the social worker, Mr Angry from Purley and Barry the elderly lifestyle guru from Watford" - that was 10 to 15 years ago!! However, what the article does do is paint a picture of a man with some serious self esteem issues, probably more to do with his size and general appearance more than anything else. He clearly took the break up of his marriage very badly and probably found solace in food which was possibly the start of his physical decline . I'm sure he's not the only person in the world to have done that. I think it is grossly unfair to critique hime for his appearance as he clearly does not want to look as he does. Yes, he could diet but as an overweight person myself, trust me, its easier to say than to do!! He makes every effort possible to keep out of the public limelight, no doubt because of his perception of himself. Radio is a good medium for him whereby his appearance is not as important hence he can be who he was 20 years ago.

That said, I used to be a regular listener but not so much so these days - primarily because of the gratuitous self back patting ("love the show Steve"). That in itself puts me off listening.

It doesn't sound a bad lifestyle to me. Flat in London for the week, country house for the weekends with a Lotus to bomb around in, people to fetch his meals and rail tickets so he doesn't have to queue, and nearly half a million a year.

It's just a really dull weekday line up. No real individual personality or attitude and they all play the same of music.

Weekends - Iggy Pop, Huey, Cerys, Craig Charles, Peterson, Tom Robinson all good and all different.
I love 6m even during the day, Huey's show is superb on Saturday a.m.

I find Steve Wright ok to be honest. Yeah he does repeat himself but gets some good guests and plays music I quite like during my working day.

It's Jeremy Vine I just can't stomach. He makes Jeremy Kyle seem half sensible!!

If I listen to radio it's to hear music. Unfortunately music seems to be a background feature to the majority of these shows and stations as it's all about boosting the ego of the presenter.

Majority of the time I just stream Deezer / Spotify through my car, even on DAB there's not much that interests me, I don't mind Absolute 80's / 90's in doses but then you just replace annoying presenters with annoying adverts.

There was a really good DAB station called Chillout or something like it, that seems to have disappeared. Used to have it on in the house on Sunday's while cleaning etc.

I miss the days of pirate radio, in the mid-2000's... Carefully scrolling through the FM range to pick up that tiny frequency of a drum & bass station broadcasting from the top floor of a high rise flat in the nearby city laugh

The main thing with Vine is that for a supposedly "serious" journalist who has worked At BBC news for decades he seems spectacularly ignorant on a vast range of subjects - from popular culture to geopolitics

Thing is, 7pm on a Friday evening is when people want "something for the weekend", not Desmond bloody Carrington and his dusty collection of leftovers from the Darby and Joan club Christmas dinner dance.
Trevor Nelson is a good host and would be ideal - move Carrington to Sunday afternoon and do away with Elaaaaaaaaine Paaaaaaaaaaaaaige and the white noise that is Paul o'Grady.
Good god man, give me Desmond Carrington any day over that self important potato that is Trevor Nelson. I'd rather listen to someone suffering from botulism than him.

He presented a recent Battle of Britain event at Biggin Hill, I didn't go but know people that did. A spectacular fkwit of the highest order apparently.

Aye - very few "gentlemen" and erudite presenters left. I miss so many of them now that so many have upped and died -

John Dunn
Benny Green
Alan Coren
David Jacobs
Malcolm Laycock

And the fact that they condemned Russel Davies to some dead spot midweek was awful. His was the last show I liked listening to where I actually learned something about the art and history of songwriting.

Dunno about ground-breaking; I always thought he was a cut-price Kenny Everett replacement.

Kenny Everett. Now you're talking!

And whilst we're on the subject of much-missed Radio 2 chaps and the dilution of the station's quality of output, let's not forget Sir Terry.

Always better on radio than TV, even he was well past his best by the time he retired.

But, to mention him in the same thread as Steve Wright is heresy. The latter is a totally derivative slimeball.
