Never seen a 16 rpm setting before - we had 33, 45 and 78 (with discs to use at all settings!) on our Bush gramophone, but what was 16 rpm used for...?
I have vague memories of spoken word LPs that ran at 16 - the original audiobooks I guess

I think you are right. The RNIB provided them as talking books for the blind, prior to moving to cassettes.

Francis Rossi once said he used to play Shadows singles at 16 rpm to slow them down enough to learn them.

Agree on the 16rpm format, my gran had a record player with this function. Didn't know about the RNIB thing, although Gran went blind in her fifties I think the compact cassette would have been in use by then

Yes; we had a Dansette exactly like that (don't remember the Bermuda name though). At some point we acquired a second one and they both ended up in the loft. Some years ago when prices of such things perked up I mentioned them to my mum. 'Oh, I threw them out a while back'. Mothers, eh?

Never did trust the multi-play gimmick - the whole stack would occasionally come crashing down.

The Dansette was replaced by this beast:

OMG for a minute there I thought that was the same music centre my dad bought. Its not its similar looking. I think our first music entre was a GEC. My first record player was a Fidelity UA8 one of these:

Ours was a Ferguson Studio 6. I like to think my ex-farming father picked it because it was a Ferguson (although in reality it was probably my mum's choice).

Unlike many others of that era the GEC had a Garrard deck instead of the more common BSR

I had a record player with 16rpm it was funny listening to records at that speed and useful sometimes if you needed to know the words of a song smile

The record player I grew up with (my parents pride and joy for many years!!)

And this is the nearest I can find to the first record player my Dad gave to me. This one had the 16rpm. Great memories!!

I know what you mean. They were for the cassette player and you had to push whichever button you needed all the way down.I loved it, though we were rarely allowed to touch it!! The cassette player did pack up in the end so we were then allowed to 'mess around' with them. I had it in my room eventually, I was so chuffed when they let me have it. Not sure what happened to it in the end though, must find out!

I've got a Shadows 7" EP Shadows to the Fore, inherited from my father, Apache, Man of Mystery, The Strangers and FBI. It gets a regular Sunday morning ironing chores playout I can tell you! Fantastic stuff, usually followed by Johnny Winter Captured Live or Roy Buchanan Loading Zone. Now, back to the Studio...

It's the perfect viewing after a long day and a couple of glasses of wine.

Gentle, soporific and some intelligent humour.

He really needs to reassemble a Lotus 7.
