James has confirmed via Twitter that lots of oil/grease were used at the appropriate times just those bits didn't make the final edit.

I own a phone like that which has stopped working properly, tempted to take it apart now...

Found it really therapeutic. Probably doesn't appeal to all but for those of us that like messing about in sheds it's great.

Toolboxes obviously props though, way too clean and tidy!
I am guessing that you didn't see the top gear episode where they built a Caterham? James spent most of the time polishing his tools, sorting them carefully back into place and moaning about Jeremy's use of a hammer!
Yup, he comes across as someone who like likes things to be properly organised and ordered.

yes When all the separate pieces are laid out on the white sheet at the beginning, grouped into the different parts that go together, James probably did that hehe

Did anyone notice the range of G clamps and sash clamps stored and clamped to batons running across the back wall - each type running from small to large.
I have a feeling that if he's got a tool or needs a particular size from a set of tools he doesn't have to rummage to find it.

The best thing about the shows is the lack of background music and the lack of reminders of what we've just seen in the previous 2 minutes and what we're about to see in the next 5 minutes.

I watched the first two back-to-back this morning and was disappointed, especially with the second (phone) programme in which the intricacies of the 1950s wiring was by-passed and just the mechanical reassembly was featured. Whilst watching the first (lawn mower) I kept wondering why he hadn't put all the parts through a washer before reassembly; it really irritated me that grimy parts were being put back togather, even if it was just a petrol mower. Overall impression is that the series is just a low-budget contract 'filler'.

Bloody love it.

Might be as I'm about the same age (a bit older), grew up with said stuff... and look just as rough as he does.

Enjoyed the lawnmower one.

Not so much the telephone one.

He seems to be in a carpentry shed rather than an engineering shed, found that a bit offcutting to be honest.

I enjoyed the first one, haven't had chance to watch the second one yet. They could easily have padded it out with a load of archive footage but I was pleased to see that they kept it to a minimum.

FWIW BBC 4 always repeats later on in the evenng so you can set the timer
Yes, but watch out for the "SL" in the listing meaning the woman in the bottom right corner flapping her arms about.

I honestly hoped the series was going to be more like this.

I watched this last night on iplayer (the lawnmower one) - I was a massive fan of The secret life of machines, so thought it might be a bit like that.

Have to be honest though... I was a little dissapointed. Thought they could have done a bit more, like show how the engine worked before assembling the whole thing or some such. Bravo to BBC4 for trying though smile

I liked the lo-fi and relaxed feel the programs had.

Caught up with the first two tonight.
There was the occasional glimmer of humour and wit but overall it was a rather odd program.
