What underpinned The Clarkson Years was that he especially and May to a lesser extent were actually motoring journos with a huge knowledge base ( I know Hammond doesn't fit this but he was just there as a foil).

The audience need to respect the views of the TG presenters. I'm afraid DJs and cooks dont cut it.

The BBC are screwed on this one - they didn't really understand why the Clarkson era worked, and so can't replicate it.

I dunno, I know nothing of James Martin but a quick G suggests he looks to be someone meticulous with high standards/aspirtions - critically important values that made old top gear work so well once you looked beyond the "mates muckin' about, havin' a laff'" exterior, (which seemingly was beyond the entire programming team at the beeb or the dribbling morons delight than was evans. )

He'll obviously have some catching up to do but its as much having the right core attitude, and he has experience presenting tv that isnt specifically aimed at people with an iq of 23.

So he cant be as bad as evans right?

I'm hoping for a bit more than just "not being as bad as Evans".

Not as shouty as Evans.
Can talk and drive at the same time.
Er....not as shouty as Evans.
A producer will never be hit for not having a steak ready as he will cook his own.
Have we had not as shouty as Evans?

Agreed 100%. Evans came across as a rich kid trying to choose his next supercar. Say what you like about Clarkson & May (Hammond was/is a rent-a-presenter) they had a background in motoring journalism and that came across on screen.

This is where Chris Harris should have been a big strength. He is no kids' entertainer though, and would probably be better presenting a 1hr programme on BBC4 about cars instead. If they keep choosing a lead presenter who quite frankly knows bugger all about cars in general, then I can see an "extended break" on the horizon for TG.

^^^Has the next series been commissioned yet? Perhaps it's already on an extended break.

The old Woolard format is what killed it off in the first place. It has to justify itself in the schedule. Old TG didn't.
William Woollard was class. End of. His review of the Reliant SS1600 is the stuff of dreams.

Chris Goffey I'd happily send to the crusher, along with many of the others...but not that Milfy blond who iirc also fronted the regional news in Brum (and straddled a three wheeler in one series that was definitely a highlight).

Surely the Beeb are in a no-win situation? They have a saleable formula that was based on the three together, now departed and unlikely to return (although after Ripper Street who knows?), but cannot replicate the formula with add-ons from the world of entertainment.

It can't just be me who thinks her presenting style is exactly the same as Quentin Wilson? And what's with the oversized fleece? Oh, that's what we were all wearing back then....

got it in one, that plus the chemistry that then built up means BBC need to give it up. Even getting the boys back wouldn't work anymore.

Be interesting to see if TGT will be any good.

Have you heard the adverts that Martin has on the radio for Asda where people phone in for recipes? He can barely lift that script off the page and thats for something that he is an 'expert' in.

Stick him in front of a camera where he pretends to be an expert in something he had no interest in and you can see how that is going to end up.
Except James Martin has a huge interest in cars.

But he is a pompous arse enveloped in a thin veneer of socially acceptable behaviour. His ego and total belief in his self importance, combined with his short temper and intolerance of anyone who isn't him is not likely to lead to a good group atmosphere.

He spends far too much time in make up and hairdressing to be remotely chilled enough or self effacing to handle any amusing team banter.

The BBC are killing the concept with their internal nepotism and total inability to separate their collective life styles and extremist beliefs from the real world.

All TG needs is three blokes who will easily take the micky out of each other in a way that is entertaining to watch, taken from a short list of people who know what a car is.

Monkey and the Septic actually seemed to be able to do the 'mocking from a position of personal respect' and adding an egotistical, coiffured, Northern ponce who has long forgotten his roots is unlikely to add to anything other than the need to find another 'third man' a few months down the road.

So he should be great then, just like Chris Evans.

Tiff Needell can attribute his entire TV career to Wollard - he's basically a tribute act - every intonation is the same.

Seems a bit OTT from the BBC if true.
