Top Gear 2016 Official TV show thread *contains spoilers*
Discussion
Read this thread before watching, so expectations were low.
Exec summary. Not as bad as feared but not good, so far.
Evans, prepared to let him develop, and tried to get past my bias of thinking he's a tts, but the screech shouting got to me in the end.
MLB, came across well in old TG SIAR PC, and did well here. Never be top presenter on TG, political reasons, but very good, measured approach.
Sabine, gets up my nose, always has, always will. No different now.
Overall concept, not reworked the show in the slightest, tatted around the edges. Why take the worst part, SIARPC, make it longer, make it some fatuous top trumps contest between two guests with no sensible discussion. At least with JC there were some interesting background stories brought out.
Extra Gear, has potential, keep Evans well away from it. Let RR and CH sort out their obvious nerves and settle in.
In short biggest problem is Evans.

Also, during the SIRPC interviews, that whole 'cheer for which car is better' was so cringeworthy..
'So Gordon, what do you own?
'a LaFerrari.'
'and Jesse?'
'I saw in a Porsche once...'
'Was it one of these? Newer? Older? This one? Like this one? How about this? Okay we'll go with the one that's closest to the Ferrari... Now everyone cheer for your favourite while I go pink n the face with excitement!!!'

To use an automotive metaphor, that was the televisual equivalent of a Nissan Arna - and one driven by an obnoxious, shouty egomaniac at that.
That one might need a bit of an explanation - the Arna was the product of a Japanese/Italian car making alliance. Recently that's given us the Fiat Spider, which is a car that combines Japanese engineering with Italian style. With the Arna you got the opposite - a Datsun Cherry with an Alfa boxer engine:Just caught this on iPlayer (was working nights last week so catching up. ) I've not read all 50+ pages of the thread but for me...
Chris Evans is far annoying than I've ever noticed before.
"Extra Gear" was actually a far better watch. I know he doesn't have the star appeal of Evans to the masses but if the shows were mine I'd swap Harris for Evans, and have Evans present the spin-off with Reid, have a more back stage/party feel to it. I just feel Chris Evans energy would fit better with that and as it's half the length of the main show, maybe he''d be more bearable in shorter doses...
I was really looking forwards to it and thought with his lifelong enthusiasm for cars Evans would prove an inspired choice for the lead job, sadly it all felt a bit awkward, maybe he just needs time to settle and the whole team to mould the format to their own personalities a bit.

Give it a rest Chris..
The audience grew throughout the hour? Probably because some people forgot it was on at tuned in 15 minutes into the show.
It won it's slot? Against what exactly?
More views than the premier of last series? Probably because more people were curious to see the new cast and how different it would be..
Those Tweets reek of insecurity to be honest..

Let's see if he's as quick to tweet next week's figures...
I have a feeling they'll only drop from here and the BBC will finally have the excuse it's been looking for to drop TG completely.
If they had wanted rid of it they would have dropped it when Clarkson went raging bull over a sandwich. A more perfect opportunity would never occur. The idea they are spending millions making a sub-standard show to destroy "the brand" is tin foil hat territory.I have a feeling they'll only drop from here and the BBC will finally have the excuse it's been looking for to drop TG completely.
However, if the goose starts to die they can kill it and point to the viewing figure as the reason why. The last episode of CH&MTG was around 5.5m viewers. I can see this new one dropping hard in numbers and not being renewed for next year.

So, Danny Baker got a writing credit for the new series! Another typical Evans move - putting his pals on the payroll, and knowing that the program is syndicated that'll do Baker's pension fund no end of good.
I'm surprised he didn't get Timmy Mallet a credit too.
Not sure if he'd ever been involved with Top Gear previously, but Danny Baker has certainly written for one J. Clarkson...I'm surprised he didn't get Timmy Mallet a credit too.

Bum boys = Fan boys, in my book. Same thing. Hardly an insult.
But it's ok for me to be called a moron?
Maybe starting off with an insult and getting your pants in a bunch when insulted back isn't the best way to get your point across? But it's ok for me to be called a moron?

I would also suggest that a lot of the knee jerkers on here tonight will tune in next week.
The format was never going to change, it's a cash cow. With new presenters there will be a few teething problems. Let's all calm down and see how it pans out.
At the end of the day it's only a tv show.
I caught up with it last night and I'm really disappointed. I'm a big Clarkson fan, both written and TV stuff, but I was genuinely rooting for this to be good. That way hopefully the Amazon show will be good too and then there would be two fun Car shows on TV...The format was never going to change, it's a cash cow. From the outset I found Evans annoying - his aping of Clarkson's presentation style might have been intended as ironic, it came across as desperate and his feigned excitement was just poor.
While 'proper' TG was always scripted it didn't feel too bad, it was done well. The opening Viper vs Vette was piss-poor in terms of 'story', script and editing. Filming was the usual superb quality. Sabine was amusing but the scripted lines by her, Evans and the pilots was dire.
The Reliant article part 1 was terribad, part 2 was better and the Jeep vs Landy was okay but poorly scripted.
The Arial piece was excellent from the outset and Matt seems to just be himself. Again beautifully filmed.
Star In A World Rally Cross Car (SIAWRXC?) should be named Star In A Mini With stickers On It. Some stars would have been good for show 1.
Mostly though I found Evans' presenting forced and his inability to get the studio audience to give a fk telling.
Really disappointed, hoping it will get better.

In fairness, this thread is more amusing that his latest show.
I agree, the weeping brainwashed Clarkson fans can be quite funny.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-36409...
The Guardian also thought it was st, and they really hate Clarkson.
Final Gear reviews are also echo exactly whats being said here, and the majority of posters seem to be from overseas and have no exposure to Chris Evans.
Still as long as they have you fighting their corner then I'm sure they are not worried

CE's response is about what you'd expect from an egotist.
Had Clarkson found himself in the same situation his response would have been far more cutting/clever not to mention, witty.
I'm still awaiting the Monkey's take on the first episode .... the silence is deafening

Caught up last night and thought it was very poor. Sure the ingredients are there, but the enduring pleasures of the old team was their banter and the fact that that they were British car nuts. This team seems to have been assembled a bit like the Spice Girls, a Ginger one, a blonde one and a (former) dark haired one etc. but with little talent for the job.
I'm not sure that Chris's status as a wannabe classic car dealer justifies his appearance, even Quentin Wilson can do it better. As others have mentioned MLB was way better than I had anticipated.
I really enjoy Chris on Radio2, but filling in brief links between records with chat with news, sports news, traffic reports and kids, is a different proposition from TV presenter. He even screws-up Friday mornings by trying to run a radio chat-show, which rarely works in the same way as say the Graham Norton show.
The BBC is littered with presenters who can talk to a viewer through a TV camera, but Chris is not one of them, running arround shouting might work on children's TV, but not on edgy BBC2.
Sabine does what she does, but again, she is no TV presenter. Unfortunately I was unaware that there was to be spin off program, with the other two presenters.
I admire Chris for what he has achieved with The CarFests, but this is definately too great a challenge for his limited talents.
BBC, you need to dig much deeper, this rubbish is not worthy of a decent budget. Now where is Chris Goffey these days?
