running arround shouting might work on children's TV, but not on edgy BBC2.
That's the crunch. As for viewing figures, the first episode had a certain curiosity value which no doubt helped. I'll record it next week - to have the benefit of the "fast forward" button. (I suspect that button will be essential during "couple of muppets in a Mini" for starters...)

Give it a rest Chris..
The audience grew throughout the hour? Probably because some people forgot it was on at tuned in 15 minutes into the show.
It won it's slot? Against what exactly?
More views than the premier of last series? Probably because more people were curious to see the new cast and how different it would be..
Those Tweets reek of insecurity to be honest..
Oh Jesus titty fking Christ.Give it a rest Chris..

Of course they do. These people are not machines built and programmed by a Grand Media Machine. They're human beings, the same as the rest of us, bearing the brunt of the expectations and responsibility of carrying an enormous IP - that they will have invested personally in, whilst being hamstrung by its existing framework - forwards.
And they're getting shredded by petty nerds who would only be happy if everything was exactly as it was before.
For Evans, the game was always going to be rigged. His only real hope - and he's a smart bloke and I'm sure he'll know this better than anyone - is to keep his chin up and allow the show to form its own identity over the next two series.
In the mean time, bell ends everywhere will bh and moan like teenagers who've just had their copy of GTA5 taken away.

Somewhat ironically for you, most people are complaining that it *is* exactly as it was before, or rather a poor imitation of it. Edited by ClockworkCupcake on Tuesday 31st May 09:40
I'm not sure why Evans is coming out so aggressively over the viewing figures. He should just keep quiet and let the numbers talk for themselves. There was always going to be a blip of curiosity over the new line-up, he needs to be careful he doesn't make a rod for his own back. If interest wanes as the series progresses it'll come back to bite him on his arse.

Then why doesn't he just let it ride out for a week or two instead of going on a defensive tweet bender? The guy is an unwatchable arse in my view - Always has been, always will be. He even manages to drag the One Show down to a level of "Me, me, me" uncomfortableness.
I didn't watch last night, so I have no personal view on TG CE style, but that's fine because I have seen enough CE in the past to know I won't enjoy watching ANYTHING with him in it...
It's a REAL shame he didn't stick by his initial claim - http://www.digitalspy.com/tv/top-gear/news/a637971...

Did anyone really expect the reviews to be good?
There were plenty wanting it to fail before it was even aired.
It was never going to be exactly the same as before (and there was plenty of moaning about the last few series) as the hosts were new. The format would not be allowed to change radically too quickly due to the international success of the format / being a cash cow (bit unfair as the BBC shouldn't just throw away money?)
Ok maybe long term CE will not be the answer or maybe he will settle into the role, but I for one am pleased he took the challenge, which he must know was not going to be easy / a hiding to nothing / thankless task. At least with the filming being done for both Top Gear and extra gear it shows that they are aware that more is needed and the format will hopefully evolve into what the majority want. Being only ever able to please a majority with what's shown the remaining will be able to console themselves with more moaning!
Quite frankly I had given up watching the last few series on a regular basis as it was (for me) no longer entertaining, predictable and seemed that the driving force of the host was how bad the show could be and yet still be signed for another season.
I am hoping CHM's new show is a success and reignites there enthusiasm.

I was prepared to like it but ....
it did feel like a poor quality tribute act (the format should have been changed to a greater extent than it was, the changes made did not enhance things)
Evans is not right, MLB was better than anticipated, Reid and Harris were awkward (and I would say the chemistry between them was pretty bad) but I felt both were worth being given the benefit of the doubt, Sabine (although very capable and with excellent English etc) having to be amusing made me feel a little uncomfortable
the programme unfortunately was left standing on the wrong side of the fine line between amusing and puerile (as did the old TG but for some reason this seemed more unacceptable with new TG)
but the main problem was that there seemed to be no genuine, spontaneous enthusiasm and no real underlying interest in the cars themselves. The programme came over more as a vehicle for the promotion of the presenters. It felt wrong ("immoral" even and certainly pointless) to be towing a Reliant behind a Series 1 up a hill, to be driving it in a speed test and to be driving it on salty beach. There were so many more interesting things that could have been done with both cars. Ditto why bother putting fake missiles on the muscle cars. The lack of respect for most of the cars (and for their owners) shown on the programme left me with no enthusiasm to watch to the end

Sounds like he's lost the plot again. Odd that he equates viewing figures with whether the show was good or not.
It was st. FACT.
Chris Evans was st. FACT.
Everyone agrees. FACT.
I sense an impending flounce/meltdown.
Well that's a matter of opinion. Shouty TV presenters like Chris Evans and Davina McCall have made fortunes out of their presentation style (plus weight-loss videos in her case). There must be a large number of people who like being spoken to as if they needed waking up to hear a stream of puerile nonsense. Most likely they are idiots, but it's a numbers game in the end. Seems I share the views of others here. It was a tired format by the end anyway, saved only by the humour and chemistry of Clarkson et al. It is very disappointing that they have no fresh ideas - almost as if the next series had already been scripted before Clarkson got fired, even down to the Stig introduction etc, but now more awkward. Why didn't they take more time instead of rushing this out?
Although always well filmed, I think I've seen one too many fake dogfights or races between car and another form of transport (bike, athlete etc) - I don't have any ideas myself. Perhaps it really has all been done!
I'll keep watching to see how it goes, but please tone down the shouting Chris - it works on TFI, but not here!

The problem for me is that Chris Evans is not a car journalist. Jeremy is a very good car journalist and always has been. The reviews he gave were always well thought out and interesting. Chris Evans just read out the spec sheet of the american cars he tested. Matt le Blanc did better with the Nomad and I would expect him to grow into the role more.
I won't watch the rest of the series now. Maybe watch it on Dave when the ratings don't count, but I think if they see the number drop below 3 million people he won't be able to say too much on twitter about how great it is.

CE's response is about what you'd expect from an egotist.
Surely his response is one of a man who has poured all of his energies in the past year into making the best programme he can, while taking disproportional criticism from all corners?I'm not CE's biggest fan, but if I had put my heart and soul into something, only for a bunch of internet plebs and journalists to try their hardest to rubbish it before they had given it a chance (I think we'd had 4pgs of people saying they would never watch again in the first 5mins), I'd be inclined to post something by way of "facts" to the contrary.
If everything he said is true, then Top Gear wasn't the total failure than so many people desperately wanted it to be. Yes, it wasn't reaching the old show's heights of 6m+. But memories are short if people think that the old show was never so flat.
I'm going to duck out of this thread before it seems like I'm defending CE. Apart from being a bit insincere (something Clarkson was guilty of many times) and over-enthusiastic, I can't see what he has done to incur such incredible ire from PH. Some of the efforts to rubbish him in this thread are try-hard at best, and playgroundesque at worst.

Now there's an idea: replace the ginger git with Devina McCall!!! Sorry, but I can't stand the ginger git, & yes, it is a matter of opinion, but seems like a majority opinion to me....Why couldn't the BEEB get new, younger talent to do this show? I dread to think how much the ginger git is paid through our license fee; will the show turn a profit from overseas sales??
