Surely his response is one of a man who has poured all of his energies in the past year into making the best programme he can, while taking disproportional criticism from all corners?

I'm not CE's biggest fan, but if I had put my heart and soul into something, only for a bunch of internet plebs and journalists to try their hardest to rubbish it before they had given it a chance (I think we'd had 4pgs of people saying they would never watch again in the first 5mins), I'd be inclined to post something by way of "facts" to the contrary.

If everything he said is true, then Top Gear wasn't the total failure than so many people desperately wanted it to be. Yes, it wasn't reaching the old show's heights of 6m+. But memories are short if people think that the old show was never so flat.

I'm going to duck out of this thread before it seems like I'm defending CE. Apart from being a bit insincere (something Clarkson was guilty of many times) and over-enthusiastic, I can't see what he has done to incur such incredible ire from PH. Some of the efforts to rubbish him in this thread are try-hard at best, and playgroundesque at worst.
Internet plebs?

I can forgive people a lot if they make me laugh, Evans never has.

Oh dear.
That is quite vulgar to be honest. Not very endearing. Perhaps he needs to say these things to reassure himself.

I just tried to have a second viewing to see if I feel differently but, I don't. I got another 10 minutes in and just zoned out.

The format is dead. It was on its last legs when the trio presented it too, but somehow they made it watchable. These days I am also less bothered about the super cars et al too. I'll never own one and to be honest they just don't do it for me anymore. They aren't interesting. I think I just liked Clarkson, Hammond and May. I think I could just about watch them do anything. TGT could feature not a single car and it would still be a better watch than the new TG.

They need a new format. Stat.

Maybe they should get Roy Lanchester in as a presenter.

I thought it was okay - but not brilliant.

I felt as though they just tried a bit too hard.

it is not and over recent years been a serious car programme. FFS its an entertainment programme that happens to be about cars.

At least with evans we don't get the sexism and right wing bks from clarkson who was using the programme as a front for his opinionated overinflated Ego.

its a change for the better imho and a work in progress - if you look back at some of the early TGs with the trio they are just as unpolished and more wooden than Evans / Le blanc

Ahhh come on, don't take it so personally, after all it would be remiss of him not to take the p*ss when he was so instrumental in the success of the previous incarnation.
And after all he's right, there are no doubt plenty on here who bhed constantly about the previous iteration and are now doing the same about the new. moan

The main appeal of CHM's TG was that it essentially was a show about good mates who don't give a single fk about political correctness and happen to like cars. If they were talking about trains, planes or food it would have been as entertaining to watch and could have easily filled the 8PM Sunday spot on BBC 2 with similar audience numbers.

The feeling I get most from this thread is that everyone would rather it was good, even if it was only to the point of where it was with the other 3 rather than just slagging it off for the sake of it

I didn't think extra gear was long enough, didn't see enough of Harris to be honest. He made some brilliant videos while doing his YouTube channel and I thought the reason they got him in was to move away from the entertainment format and get more petrolhead purist, which would have been brilliant.

I think if the BBC keep the current line up and format then it will last maybe 2/3 series and then will need to be re-done again or dropped completely. I don't see it lasting the same amount of series that JC and co have just done.

For me the disappointment with Chris Evans is purely that he didn't do anything creative with the show. The shouting was annoying but presumably will calm down.
Very much this. I'm actually something of an Evans fan, ever since his BB days, and his presenting style doesn't really bother me too much

For whatever reason however, the programme introduced very little in the way of new features, and if anyone should have had the power to revolutionise it then surely it was Evans. I can only assume it was like one of those God-awful "brain-storming" sessions you see on The Apprentice for months where nothing original is proposed, so in the end they just went with what came before. That's the most disappointing element for me - opportunity badly missed, death through indecision I fear

On another note, why does Evans even need to do any of the car reviews or features? Let him just be the linchpin in the studio

I enjoyed the content but hated he presentation. Evans was forced trying to be Clarkson, LeBlanc sounded like he was narrating one of those dull American wildlife programs on the discovery channel.

LeBlanc though, has potential, but IMO Evans missed an opportunity to change the shows presenting style, but a faux Clarkson who knows little about cars (except that some look nice in white) is not what the show needed.

Mostly thinking about his Nomad video on Extra gear, probably the best bit.

Trouble is he hasn't put his heart and soul in. He's got a 'full' time job with his R2 show (with its very early starts), the One Show on a Fri, TFI, his CarFest thing that he constantly promotes, his pub, and who knows what other outside interests.

In my experience when you don't concentrate on one task, and split yourself thinly you end up with, well pretty much what we saw the other day.

I finally managed to watch it sober today after coming home drunk on sunday and recovering yesterday.

The only bit I actually watched was the nomad but and extra gear, every bit with CE in it, running around and shouting like a tt gave me a headache, throwing two old 4x4's around even though I am a massive Land Rover fan just annoyed me.

I have always hated CE in everything he has done but I thought I woukd give it a try, from now on I will only be watching extra gear

I must be the only person who actually enjoyed it...

Evan's was a little on the annoying side i will admit, and i also agree it does feel a little TFI in places.

But the sad thing is it wont get any better, the old risque TG is gone. All presenters will have been told to behave, with big stars like Evans and Leblanc i highly doubt we'll ever see this show push its luck.

I think let Evans do the studio and challenges. Harris is the much better driver and journalist when it comes to power tests. Leblanc lacked abit of charm on the review but that could be sorted out.

However i dont think we will see another series, LeBlanc will quit and evans will probably spiral out of control.

Mind you not a bad thing if we get Sabine, Harris and Reid.
