Evans kills it (not in a good way) for me.
He can't drive and knows Jack about cars despite his dream garage.
I'm sure the Beeb hope other territories will just buy the brand. Which they probably will.
licence the idea or flog the show? they might buy it as fodder as they'll literally show anything to fill airtime but theres no way they'll pay the same $$ as they did before without the viewing numbers clarkson & co attracted. TBF I doubt there'll be a 2nd evans season, it'll be canned and years from now we'll have forgottenthis little episode ever existed and then someone will be like "hey remember when beeb made that terrible top gear season with that utter muppet" and we'll all be like "whoa yeah haha". and it'll be a great trivia tripup question

I can't remember whether it was on one of the many TG threads on here, but there was the idea that Evans TG would die on its arse, then the at the time untitled Clarkson/Hammond/May show would buy the name and they would have Top Gear on Amazon.

Could still happen hehe

Having summoned up the courage to watch the "Extra Gear" bit... I quite liked it. paperbag

Maybe it was the awfulness of the main show that made it seem better, it was good to see Monkey being Monkey and not some ultra sanitised, tightly scripted blandroid. It's never going to be the main event, and it was possibly all the better for that. Still too much WHOOOHOOOOO in it, but meh, it wasn't as downright awful as Chris Evans.

Dissapointed they stuck with the same format and particularly with the contrived skits. I had hoped that we would get a proper reset and watch the presenters gel together doing cool stuff the rest of us don't get to do.

I did find the commentary from Evans jarring, a combination of the way he was delivering the lines and the complete lack of substance in what he was saying. Sounded like a local radio advert for double glazing.

For all that I don't think the episode was any worse than the episodes of Top Gear that are in a similar style - it was no more cringeworthy to me than the Ambulance episode from the previous season for example.

So, what happens if TG does get more viewers (or greater share) next week?

How will the PH massive twist and contort that to suit their vision?
I'd be very surprised. Every forum or article feedback I've read is about 80% people saying its crap.

If the figures go up then new TG has found a whole new audience. If thats the case then fair play to him.

I thought Porter had also rather gone off Clarkson as well, at least that's the feeling I get from his SP stuff?
Worth remembering that Porter was involved in (I assume) some of the less brilliant Top Gear stuff.

Top Gear of the Pops, anyone....

Of course, the BBC may have just been trying to stimulate debate.

The money comes from syndicating it overseas. I think the broadcasters who buy Top Gear will still buy Top Gear and be far less affected by a change of personnel.

It certainly won't be watched by me in the future. I'd rather watch the old re-runs.

my two cents. i went into the episode thinking its going to be awful based on the press and threads on here

MLB is actually a surprisingly good presenter, Chris will calm down a bit in future episodes and voice overs i think. It felt like a refreshed version of old TG which is a good thing. It was fun to watch, great Sunday evening entertainment.

i hope what people come to realize is that the split of TG into two shows is beneficial to us all. We get a refreshed TG and then a whole new show with a cast that we know have a great relationship and humour. Its win win......if chris clams his voice a bit

ok, you may now tear me to threads...

We turned over to Antiques Roadshow after 37 minutes. Honestly, the "race" in the Reliants was just a trip up the motorway...the fast cars and fighter pilots..who were sitting in the cars???!

I can sort of see that the presenters might start to gel but please stop shouting!

In fact thinking about it, the program was rubbish...if you are relaunching a car program you start with something truly special, a new Ferrari, something like that...as i was it was just meh...

I mus say that we did find Antiques Roadshow far more interesting.

5th Gear recently did a race between a Lambo Aventador and a racing stunt plane and the pilot had a good go in the Lambo (to good effect) while VBH was treated to some 6g aerobatics without so much as breaking a chunda.

If there had been no old Top Gear (which evolved into the show it became) I think everyone would be a bit more positive, as a stand alone show it was great I thought - next weeks looks good also. Don't look a gift horse etc

It could have been a LOT better, but it was still better than old top gear.

Old top gear was DEAD, the 3 "chums" were SO BORING, hammonds ham acting was beyond bad, captain slow was either doing pre-filght boring facts or asleep, clarkson was a dinosour. It was like watching a puppet show from the 1860's. The whole show was stale, it had got so bad that they had to waste top gear money by cocking about in argentina with 100 crew just to get noticed. At the end it was like they were deliberatley trying to sabotage the show by making it utter crap, it couldnt have gotten any worse. Most people i know didnt even bother to watch it anymore.

New top gear needs to drop the boring clebs, i could have muted ramsey and that other boring tt, if *genuine* celebs want to come on the show and talk CARS and drive on the new rally cross (good idea btw) then OK. BUT if all they want to do is promote their crap then they can sod off its not a **COMMERCIAL BREAK** ITS THE BBC!!! AND its my FcensoredG "TAXES" your WASTING!

They also need to loose the ste cars, nobody with a brain needs to see a reliant robin EVER again. All they had to do was visit Pagani and rag a new car, its called Top Gear NOT chavtastic 80's in the rain. If i want to watch that rubbish or the old "weve bought a banger for 50 quid and its breaking down all the time" crap ill go up to newcastle and sit in a dustbin getting high off my tits.

Im in no hurry to dismiss this presenting team just yet, Matt was GREAT, we need more of Chris Harris on the main show too. I think the problems may be not so much the people ON screen, but the people OFF it. But BIG changes need to happen and FAST, even if it means re-editing. This was a golden opportunity to make a NEW better top gear and it was mostly wasted.

Biggest problem for top gear is the REALLY GOOD QUALITY CONTENT thats online all year round.

If "old" TG was so awful why is it practically the main stay of "Dave". Even at it poorest showing it was light years ahead of the trash we had served up on Sunday.

Old Top Gear died when Clarkson left and the remaining presenters tried to be like him. It's the same again really.

I thought Harris' lap in the Nomad in Extra Gear was a great piece, properly demonstrating what he's good at, and I hope they use it in the future. No doubt this series is already set, but if it makes it to season 2, then hopefully CH will be given the platforms he needs to shine. A studio is not where he belongs.
