Instead the push was behind Jay Leno's Garage which also started this weekend.
Marvellous. Watched the first episode on the net (never fond of watching TV on a laptop). Have just set the Sky box to record the series. It's repeated on Weds evenings.

Thanks for the headsup on that, I'd have missed it.

Saw Jay Leno's Garage last night too. Good stuff. Theyre not all going to be about muscle cars and dragsters like last night's was, but it was much better than CETG.

The Leno show is decent. It's aimed squarely at the enthusiast and doesn't attempt any fakery or 'storylines'.
For a comedian he doesn't seem to have a funny bone in his body but that's fine in this context.

Last official word from the BBC regarding Top Gear was that the next series would begin filming "in September". Well, September is less than two days away and no presenters have signed a contract. Matt LeBlanc told Variety magazine that his main priority was his new CBS sit-com 'Man with a Plan', so no doubt he will be waiting to see if that takes off before commiting to another series of TG.

That September deadline looks fanciful, and even if things do start to move, a decent TG series takes 6-9 months of pre-production, planning writing and fiming, assuming you already have the staff in place (the recent crap one took 15 months).

BBC Top Gear is currently dead in the water. What are the odds that the Beeb will try and salvage something from the brand and licence it back to W. Chump and Sons?

The old Woolard format is what killed it off in the first place. It has to justify itself in the schedule. Old TG didn't.
William Woollard was class. End of. His review of the Reliant SS1600 is the stuff of dreams....................

Quite a varied and enjoyable episode, particularly the Formula First bit. I'd forgotten how good the old Top Gear could be!

Yes! And bearing in mind it's time, full of informative, newsworthy articles like the latest in tyres, and Motorsport, yet retaining a responsible approach rather than just descending into hooning around.

Which people like us may watch. But, very few others. That's exactly what killed old TG off.

It's true, but then no-one is officially billing it as a TG replacement, and the makers of it never intended it to be one. It is a cable-network show produced on a low budget designed to bring in car enthusiasts and people who like Jay Leno (which is A LOT in the US.)

Not dissimilar to the thing Brian Johnson did for Discovery Turbo, or it could even be compared to some of James May's solo work.

Mmmm - He's easier to like than Evans, but that's not saying much and generally I agree with you.

He seems to have the same problem as Evans in that just because he likes cars doesn't mean he's great at talking about them.

I've never been able to sit through more than a few minutes of Leno doing anything before turning it off though, which is more than I can stand of Evans...

I've signed up to Amazon Prime now in anticipation. The little clips of Clarkson, Hammond and May promoting it give me more laughs in 30 seconds than the entire last series of Top Gear.

With all the films and drama series on Amazon Prime it's not bad value aside from The Grand Tour, so I think it's worth it. I'm working my way through The Man In The High Castle at the moment.

I enjoyed watching the interview with Wilman. Elaine Bedell completely changed and was visibly annoyed at the end when he mentioned the truck driver/prostitute institute. Hate to think what it was like at the time behind the scenes.

Leno used to stand in for Clarkson in The Sunday Times, his columns were always dull. He was also bloody awful around the track when he was on SIARPC. As was Chris Evans...

Ok, I'll say it as no-one else has- Jenson Button is taking a sabbatical and TG is looking (apparently) for presenters. Co-incidence?

When I saw he was taking a sabbatical, I must admit my first thought was hoping he'd now be taking on a Top Gear role.
Can't see it happening but it's a nice thought anyway.

I really can't see why anyone would WANT to present TG; it's a poisoned chalice at the moment. For a start there really was nothing wrong with Chris Evans - OK he's a loud larger than life character but he's a good presenter. However NOBODY could have made that last series of TG work - the material they had from the writers was utterly dreadful. How come they could have the might and talent, the resources of the the BBC behind them and come up with that? No ideas. No imagination. Take for example the "finale", the Mini "jump" thing; who thought that up? And then who thought it would be decent tv? To me that whole thing summarised the entire season.

Not Evans fault; I wish he'd stayed and tried another season at least. Obviously after ditching whoever was writing the material.
