Derek was fabulous television. Really well researched - and very true to life for some on the fringes of society.
I loved it too.

It seems to have been misinterpreted by some.

Totally disagree, Derek was badly written, the scripts were terrible, how many times did we have talking heads just saying how 'kind' derek was when he was mostly a dick to everyone around him. The character was also a rehash of an earlier RG character who he basically used to take the mic out of people with learning difficulties.

As I say he has done some great stuff, the office and extras were up there with the best, his recent stuff has just been dire and I do think that has a lot to do with merchant not being involved.

Quite difficult to tell quite where the character ends and the real RG starts I think, they seem to blend into one quite easily. I don't think he's acting much a lot of the time.
That's the impression i get too.

Just back from seeing this, thought it was good, and if you like the office you'll enjoy this. The script in not exactly Scorsese, and the acting wont win any awards, but it is a good laugh for office fans.

The office was a superbly crafted situation comedy, this just looks like a hack job to me

Watched it tonight.

Didn't think anything was all that original and it mainly seemed to be a lot of things Coogan had Alan Partridge doing years ago. I just kept thinking seen it before with Partridge.

Poor show overall.

Went to see it earlier today and really liked it. Had a few cringeworthy moments but was very funny at times. We saw a more human side to David Brent in this. Gets 7/10 from me.

I'd agree with that. I did laugh out loud at the "dentist chair" bit hehe

Listened to an interview with RG on the Radio a couple of weeks back where he was plugging the movie and sang a few songs. What I struggle with is where RG ends and DB starts, DB is obviously a massive bell end as has been pointed out, I am just not sure if RG is, he slips in and out of character so easily that it is hard to distinguish the two. Interview was good though and the Wife and I laughed out loud at the songs......But you would only want to listen to them once.

Thought some of it was good, but there were awful moments too. No where near the same level of execution as the office.

The issue I have with RG is that he seems to me to try and portray himself as an 'Artist' and that his comedy has some deep and meaning reasoning about it, but as far as I can see it's in the main, lowest common denomonater stuff, and all about laughing at people that are different (he loves having a pop at fat people), now there's nothing particularly wrong with that kind of comedy but don't pretend its something that it isn't, again take Derek, most of it was pretty low brow base humour but he was desparate for us to think it was something that it wasn't, well IMO he was desparate to show people he loves 'mongs' after his crap Susan Boyle jokes.

I was disappointed none of the old cast weren't in the film as well, I thought "Finchy" would have turned up at some point frown

Even a telephone call to one of them could have worked.....

I'm guessing he didn't want to include anything that Merchant may have had a hand in writing for The Office as they clearly don't like each other any more.

I get so tired of people on the Internet saying Ricky Gervais is a bell end.

What the fk did they ever do that was creative?

fk all, that's what.
Look, I can't fly a helicopter, but if I see one crashed into a tree, I can say with all honesty... "Dude fked up!".

You don't need to be an expert in something to know when someone else is crap at it.

Same, I was gutted to hear none of the old crew would be involved. Would've loved to see Tim and Dawn at one of the gigs, even just catch a glimpse of Nelson the dog (great man, great dog) at his house.

One episode (I assume it was the final one) brought a tear to my eye.
