As the antithesis of the "Young people and sensible boring saloons" thread, I thought I'd start this.

Do you know of anyone who drives a modern car that's "too young" for them? I'm 45 and would drive something like a Sunbeam Lotus or 205 GTI as I grew up in the hot hatch era and that's OK. However, I wouldn't buy a new Focus RS or Honda Type R as I believe I'd feel foolish in it. A bit like wearing skinny jeans or a baseball cap.

Am I doing this right?

Speaking as a proper old git to some mere youth of 45- drive what the f***k you want, where you want and how you want . If somebody thinks your car is 'age inappopriate ' it say far more about them than it does about you . I'm 63 and about to go on a 1000 mile blat in a Caterham - tragic eh ?

My Godfather who is in his late 60's drove a Golf GTi for the last few years or so, I'm fairly sure he has something similar now.

He had Merc SL's for years for commuting from Surrey into London, got sick of having an expensive car that was getting bashed in car parks and on the street, and used buckets of fuel sitting in traffic. Wanted something that was cheap enough to buy that he wouldn't care about where he left it too much, was cheaper to run and quick enough that it didn't feel like a let down after his old cars, hot hatch made perfect sense.

I always theorised that unscrupulous dealers were aggressively upselling top spec models to vulnerable older people who came in for the base model.

Thanks, had a mid-life crisis moment there. I feel invigorated by the suggestion that I'm further away from death than many on here. biggrin

Caterham is an anomaly, anyone can drive one but if you are old you have to wear a flying jacket and goggles. It's the rules!

There's a right old 'lady' (would say easily in her mid to late fifties) that drives around Reading in a fully liveried / chavved up Focus RS. Though it might just be a lifetime of fags, special brew and farming babies that makes her look old. Possibly?

I occasionally see an older woman, mid 50's - 60's, very well to do looking, bouffant hair do etc, driving on the A3, lane 1, about 60 mph, bolt upright in her seat and very close to the wheel; in a Clio 197.

There's an old geezer around here who drives an immaculately kept BMW 850. He is late 70s (and that's being kind), flat cap, muffler, overcoat from Greenwoods, wife replete with pink hat in the passenger seat. Not totally sure about the attire but, car-wise, that's how you do it. I'm not going to tell him what clothes to wear or what car to drive, that's his business, so long as he remains safe and isn't infuriatingly slow. Be yourself, not what you think others want you to be, and yes, that includes the freedom to ignore people like me!

Anything but a clone factory spec diesel Audi A4, BMW 320 or boggo Merc! hehe

At 40 I'm not sure I could pull off a Lime Green Focus RS but something the Megane RS I could happily see myself in.
