Saving lives at sea: BBC 1

Just because someone has been doing something for 20 years does not mean that they are doing it right. A lot of plane crashes happened because people were scared to speak up to a more senior/experienced pilot when they weren't doing things right. That's why just culture was introduced in the aviation industry to try and reduce incidents.
That's why some Asian airlines don't allow all-Asian flight crews. There's far too much cultural deference to rank in some Asian cultures to question potentially dangerous orders.Laurel Green said:
Yep, a very good first episode. What I find hard, is finding words to describe the actions of the men and women whom go forth with little/no regard for their own safety to save others in need of saving - awesome doesn't even come close!
Too true.I remember some years ago watching the BBC documentary about the 1981 Penlee Lifeboat Disaster. Just thinking about the heroism and total altruism of the the guys manning the Solomon Browne as they valiantly attempted to save the lives of the crew and passengers of the Union Star makes my eyes well-up.

Powerful stuff and very moving from the very beginning. I know some of the people at Penlee and even after all these years it is a big part of the station life.
The new series is off to a flyer mind you, some great footage (even a tiny bit of the Ivan Ellen, Penlee's current boat almost getting airborne )

I can not speak for all but I never used to think of any consequences until I was back on land, to me going out on a shout was just an everyday thing, perfectly normal.ps, did my last trip in 2006, learned to swim 4 years ago.
