Star Trek: Beyond...It's getting fabulous reviews!!!
Discussion
6/10 from me.
It's Trek Jim but not as we know it (bar the outstandingly observed characterizations from some very talented actors).
Even though it's an alternate universe Trek there are many-many plot holes for trekkies to ponder and to point out just one, and it's not a spoiler so I won't tag it, since when did the federation have anything resembling 'Yorktown' during Kirk's time-period?
Even in the Next Gen's time the federation space ports and outposts were nowhere near that sophisticated. That was almost of 'Dyson-sphere' complexity and technological achievement. Great to look at but we've wandered away from canon more than a smidge here.
As for the film itself and the ending: Kirk riding around like a pro on a motorbike that worked perfectly and that had been adapted in almost no time at all to eject a substance that freezes behind him creating a wall to block out the bad guys as he races around an extremely uneven landscape followed by him throwing himself off the bike to meet mid-air with the heroine at exactly the same moment well, come on chaps, that's beyond poor and shows Justin Lin's preference for Fast and the Furious type outlandish action. Again, this is not Trek. Kirk, whilst an action hero, was never involved in this kinda stuff. The action scene where him and Picard teamed up when he died was more his type of fight. This has just gone off the rails now as a Trek film but not as an everyday sci-fi action film.
They tried to redress this new direction being taken by concentrating more than previously on the characters and in particular the Bones/Spock relationship but for me that didn't compensate for the lack of believability in the whole thing.
To summarise then a good evenings cinema entertainment but very-very lite on Trek lore despite it attempting to be the opposite with it's many references and nods to the various TV Series.

3) The Enterprise gets blown up YET AGAIN and they are stranded on a primitive planet YET AGAIN. This plot has been done to death. You can't really call it Star Trek if you keep loosing your ship every 5 minutes.
In the reboot - the Enterprise has been close to destruction in every film - when it finally happened - it was kinda a 'meh!' moment. Even the crew didn't seem to be impacted by it's destruction. This was made all the worse by the fact that both Kirk and Spock seemingly wanted off the Enterprise anyway.
When they finally got a new ship (mirroring what happened in ST3) it just didn't feel like they were going home.
Perhaps we need a startrek thread with spoliers in the title
On my 'to see' list.
Sci fi/action - yes. True Star Trek, maybe not (but I'll reserve judgement until I see it).

That was my feeling on seeing the trailer. The fact that a Star Trek film is advertised and promoted on Kiss radio says much.Sci fi/action - yes. True Star Trek, maybe not (but I'll reserve judgement until I see it).

On the upside Karl Urban as McCoy gets much more time on screen, he is really perfect for the part and has some really funny exchanges with Spock.
Right, I'm sold - I thought he was the best thing about the first film and definitely underused in the second, so that's great news as far as I'm concerned. The interplay between Spock and McCoy was one of the delights of the TV series.

The bad guys looked like a Hirogen-Jem'Hadar cross breed. They were quite poorly written IMO and I never really felt much from them. Might have been better to go against a traditional enemy like the Klingons who looked fantastic in Into Darkness? I'm glad they've pulled it away from simply copying the original films.
Overall I enjoyed it and they've done a good job of keeping it simple with plenty of action which will appeal to the majority

Just an extrapolation of Deep Space Nine really. Very Banksian too.
The problem is Deep Space Nine was built 100 years later and yet is nowhere near as advanced in comparison so I agree that the Yorktown doesn't really make sense in that timeline. I don't think it was well thought out to be honest. I think someone just thought hey we now have the processing power to make a big CGI city in space, lets chuck it in there.Guvernator said:

Deep Space 9 wasn't a federation space station though - it was a Cardassian one that was re-purposed by the federation.I do agree however that Yorktown was far more advanced than anything the federation appeared to have in the TMP or TNG era.
7 out of 10 from me.
Watched it in Imax and was blown away by the majority of the visuals - daft Fast & Furious moments aside. I am also still slightly deaf from the volume; completely OTT and even my two teenage sons complained about it!
Liked all the nods to Trek "canon" and has been mentioned earlier, Urban as McCoy is a real treat; I can hear DeForest Kelley in every line he delivers.
A change of director doesn't produce a reduction in lens flare though.

Went and watched this over the weekend with my wife and 9y/o lad.
We all enjoyed it - I'm quite liking the reboot series.
Karl Urban is brilliant as Bones, and Quinto is a good fit for Spock too - the banter is pretty good and that made the film for me tbh.
Idris Elba was under used - he could have been so much better.
I remember going to see Star Trek TMP when it first came out at the cinema.... that blew me away!

I quite enjoyed it, as an action flick. Some very good nods to the past, the 'photo' was quite nice to see and as mentioned Spock and Bones have been cast excellent, great performances from the pair of them, overall a very fun movie.
The bit towards the end with The Beastie Boys - Sabotage used as a weapon, was quite cringey and not at all Star Trek, but I actually quite liked it, nice tie back to the first film.
I was also disappointed that the new Enterprise didn't look more like the original 'A' Enterprise

I think the Nimoy tributes were wonderfully well handled and the photo moment was a really lovely touch. Not only did it fit the moment for Quinto's spock but it was also perfect for the viewer. The bit towards the end with The Beastie Boys - Sabotage used as a weapon, was quite cringey and not at all Star Trek, but I actually quite liked it, nice tie back to the first film.

Overall I thought the movie was great. Reminded me of what Star Trek should be, fun, silly, with fantastic interplay with the crew (Urban and Quinto nail the Bones/Spock relationship so perfectly well). Overall you could clearly tell the movie had been co written by a MASSIVE Star Trek fan as the essence was plain to see. Better movie that "Into Darkness".
I was worried when they started talking about needing loud noises to disrupt the signal as you could see it coming but as it turned out the Beasty Boys bit was actually really fun. Kirk's face when it kicked in was great and when someone said "I that Classical Music?" And that is a pretty badass song anyway so fitted the whole 'taking the fight to them' vibe of the move.
I also thought the Enterprise A was a nice balance between old and new with it's swept back nacelle struts
Also.... "For Anton" just stopped me dead when it appeared on screen
Agreed with all that... great movie.
The sheer amount of dead Enterprise crew with no resulting whinging and crying into beer was a refreshing departure from the recent trends of miserable moping in films. Particularly enjoyed the shot of a catwalk full of red shirts all getting offed with a single blast - great nod to the red shirt meme.
