I wouldn't imagine Mo, Justin Rose, Chris Frome or Andy Murray are too fussed about £25k for a medal.

Also as said earlier, if the Olympian is good looking and has a decent personality there are rewards aplenty on offer.

Tom Daley, Chris Hoy, Sir Steve, Bradley etc will all be earning well and rightly so.

But some of the others will be.

An office junior worked for my parents in the 90's. That person went to win the World Championship in her chosen sport a number of times, and also won an Olympic medal.

I don't think they have received anything like the same money as the above names.

It's not all easy going once they retire - Rose, Froome and Murray will be fine, as they compete in sports with huge financial rewards.

Mo may make it in the media, but if not - where does he go? - coaching is about the only career path open to him.

If you look back at former Olympians in athletics, rowing, and several other sports, once retired, they either have to find a coaching role or re-train.

I think many over-estimate the money earned by those outside the big stars, especially in athletics.

Mo will get SERIOUS money from endorsements if he wants. We are talking many, many millions. More than most people earn in their working life.

It's pay dirt if he decides to take it.

Seen it happen.

Mo's already a multi-millionaire. He'll be fine, if sensible.

But if you look back at many of the big names of the past, they've faded into obscurity. I suppose Mo is a bit different due to his medal count - but we had athletes who were big household names in the 90s who have faded into obscurity and alternative employment.

Obscurity isn't synonymous with destitution, probably usually the opposite.

Some grammar would help. Just to help the cause.

I interviewed a runner who won a silver medal in the Olympics. I went to his home. He a very nice chap, but his home was nicer. He wasn't short of a bob or two. He had a short career as well and I was a little surprised.

So there are benefits to be had. And they are better nowadays than they were a few years ago.

I'm a rugby fan and I've met household names from a few years ago and they got little benefit from the sport, other than the playing of it. The pay, even after the big change in the 90s, was poor for most, and many premiership players don't make much over average wage.

I reckon that sportsmen and sportswomen are entertainers, and how, and they put their body on the line each week for little in the way of reward. They deserve more given how much entertainment they provide. One assumes they are doing what they love. Sooner or later most run out of time and they have to change course.

For Team GB it is one hell of a Games.

Interesting to consider that a League 2 footballer (so to put it another way, probably somewhere in the region of the 750th best player in England) is looking at £1000 per week. Yet the second best swimmer in the world in a particular discipline will more than likely be lucky to see half of that for a short period of time. Some of the hours Olympic hopefuls put in at my workplace would mean they're nowhere near the minimum wage if you looked at it that way, not that they would ever complain as obviously it's not about the money for them.

Fortunately many knocking on the door of the elite get to combine training with a degree in a related area now, so when they no longer have funding at the age of 28 or something they at least have something out of it.

The coverage of some sports is utter ste; the sailing coverage is particularly awful.

Home advantage; the Brazilian pole vaulter has just vaulted to a PB and an olympic record; the crowd are doing most of the work. hehe

I don't know but they want bloody shooting.
At the start of the women's elimination race last night (arguably one of the most exciting events), I put the box on pause and nipped to have a pee and make a drink.
Started up the action and settled down to watch.
Brilliant they switched to BBC 4 and when I turned to 4 it had finished.
