I dont see the issue. In today's world of multiple channels, freeview, sky, box sets, films im sure you can find something else to watch.

Its one of the last free sporting events on TV, and with a multitude of sports they are trying to cover as much as possible. Also its a great way to introduce people to sports that they might never have tried or even heard of before.
Free sporting event on the only TV channel you are forced to pay for.

I got particularly fed up with the coverage of the men's cycling road race. Constantly switching over to the low resolution red button feed. Why they couldn't have put it on BBC4HD and left it there I have no idea. None of my TV-watching gizmos switch to and from the red button channels very quickly so very frustrating!

my thoughts also. Not interested myself and not seen any of it. Don't intend to. And why I don't watch BBC1 or 2 at all
Pretty much the same in our household, we're not the slightest bit interested so don't watch.

Just wait until they force the Paralympics on us...

Always reminds me of the Monty Python sketch " And now for the 100 M for people with no sense of direction..."

BBC red button channels have both HD and SD channels. On Sky they start at Ch. 472 with the first eight being HD channels and the second eight being SD.

I love their coverage. The more the better as far as I'm concerned.

I like the TV coverage. More often than not, the programmes I'd normally watch are still on anyway.

And as mentioned, 2 weeks every 2 years isn't really a lot is it?

Wow, I bet you're fun at barbecues.

Sport (especially amateur) can be inspirational, the Olympics gives you a chance to recognise what for hundreds of athletes is the culmination of years, maybe decades of hard work. Most of this stuff is never on TV, giving it a carte blanche "I don't like it" is bks when there are 100 different sports to choose from.

If you really don't like it, go fishing or do something equally lifeless, lazy and uninspiring.

Generally I really like the BBC, but whoever was commentating with Boardman on the men's and women's road races was just dreadful.

Also, on one of the women's basketball matches the commentator called the court a pitch, the basket the rim and a possession a soirée. Do some bloody research first please.

He was appalling. He barely let Chris finish a sentence. In fact I'm not even sure they were in the same room.
It was as though they had two commentators on different stations broadcasting at the same time.

There prime Saturday night drama, Casualty is celebrating a 30th year anniversary. To commemorate it a two part 'big story''. Split by about 4 weeks either side of the Olympics. Dicks.

It's the aftermath which bugs me more, you know when they try to jam each olympian down our throats months after it's finished by putting them on every entertainment programme as humanly possible as a guest or pundit.

Some of the events, maybe, but on some the athletes can approach the ability of those in the main event.

A while back I competed (badly) at the British Rowing Indoor Championships. Watching some of the disabled athletes performance was breathtaking - there were a few who did the 1k in just over 3 minutes (which would put them in medal contention against some of the able bodied athletes).

The BBC home page is focusing way too much on the olympics, but as has been said, its only a couple of weeks every 4 years.

I (like many I spoke to) wasnt fussed in the run up to this years. But now its on im finding myself watching it quite a lot.

As said, the level these athletes is at can be simply staggering. Its worth watching any event IMO just to see how good people can be at various sports.

The BBC's production of the Olympics is truly world class, I completely understand why they do it. Via Tv and iPlayer, you can watch every event. Other countries don't get that. Pretty much every event has commentators that actually know what they're on about. We get to see lots of daft sports that are interesting once in a while, like kayaking and fencing.

If you don't like it, then watching something else. Then BBC's remit was always to provide what commercial stations don't. In reality, no one can get the viewers together to do a proper coverage of the women's 10m air rifle (which is clearly not even a valid sport), but the BBC provide it. Personally, I'd much rather see more of the liscence fee being used in this way than yet more celebrity cake wkers that you can get pretty much anywhere.

Tl;dr? It's summer. Why not go out instead?

The gold medal lady got every shot within 0.01mm. WTF??? How is that even possible???

Love it.
